The following situation:

My roommate, who is currently in Canada on a closed work permit, agreed to help out on another project with another employer for one day (they urgently needed a replacement and asked him if he could help).
The payroll company asked for his work permit, he showed it but no one ever noticed that his work permit is closed. He also provided his SIN so his salary will be filed with CRA. I am really worried about him since his PR application is still in process and I am scared he might get caught and hence deported. He claims that CRA doesn't usually share their information with CIC. Has anyone ever heard of a situation similar to this? What are the chances CIC will know about this?

It's impossible for any of us to tell you what the chances are that he will be caught. However people certainly are caught and removed from Canada for this reason - so he's definitely taking on quite a bit of risk. And it's certainly possible this could somehow impact his PR application.

Anyway - it's his life and he's an adult. He knows what he's doing is illegal. So he should be prepared to accept the consequences if things go south and his life gets messed up because of this.

Check with the HR if they paid him government benefits like EI, CPP. IF they does, yes it will be a problem. Unfortunately, CRA and CIC shared there files. That is why many are caught at the border.

I assume they did. They took his SIN number, meaning the amount he earned on that day will be filed with CRA and I guess that automatically includes EI and CPP as well, doesn't it?

Yes - that's what this means. If they took his SIN - there's going to be a record.

Exactly. The question is whether this information will be shared with CIC or not.
Thanks for your input, scylla. I will keep you guys updated. He should receive his PR around October if everything goes well. And if not, well, then he won't.
