Hi - this is the most comprehensive thread for Indians applying for a Canadian Study permit. I've got a better insight into the application process from here than compared to any other sources. Local agents are almost completely useless, only good for assisting with their SPP apps. Kudos to gkb8062 for your help. You understand the India specific problems. You rock ! But I hope you're ok, seems like you haven't replied in a while.

Anyway - Now I'm desperately seeking advice for my application. You will find my case to be unique.

My profile -

- 10th 91%
- 12th 88%
- GAP YEAR - studying for entrances :'(
- B.Arch 68.15% First Class. Had 2 supplementaries ( = failed in 2 external subjects, cleared in subsequent semesters, campus distractions ) Grades not stellar.

- Job ( 2011 - 2013 )- high powered interdisciplinary tech startup by MITians, based in Silicon Valley ( half team in Delhi ), funded by big VC firms such as Mitch Kapor, Lerer Ventures, General Catalyst Partners -$1.8 million seed funding. Made it to TechCrunch Disrupt in 2012 6th spot. Unfortunately closed down in 2013 due to lack of 2nd round of funding.

- Our product was a web platform for team sharing & collaborating over architectural 3d models ( sort of YouTube / Google docs for 3D models ).

- I was there from the beginning
- envisaging and ideating about the product and its features, from an Architect / Designers perspective,
- collaborating with and helping the software engineers understand paradigms and requirements.
- Researching market trends and technologies, studying research papers and compiling information.
- Then myself learnt hands on web development, began coding and developing on my own to add features.
- Learnt 3D graphics programming on my own and managed most of the front-end 3D and managed to implement a cloud based renderer.
- Implemented a few research papers as solutions.

As you can see so far, very unique and niche skill set.

- Birth of research interest - development of CAD technologies for the design process, collaboration over design and alternative solutions, role of computer graphics in research.

- Quit job to contemplate gradschool. Looked up research. Worked on my website - couple of paper implementations on graphics ar3f(dot)in for 1 yr

- Accepted at SFU - MSc Interactive Arts & Tech ( 3 yrs ), with supervisor.
- Area of research of supervisor - Design Alternatives, matching closely with my area, and several overlapping
- $20,0000 annual funding package, subject to good performance. Includes RA, TA, grant and scholarships.
- SFU research degrees fees are @ local rate for internationals - approx. $6500 p.a.

Background -

- parents NRIs. Father working as Principal Civil Engineer in Saudi Arabia. Mother housewife.
- Father will support - funds in excess of $100,000 ( FD + savings ).
- another significant amount in shares, not sure
- Property - one flat owned by mother, one by father. More to inherit ( if grandparents oblige :p)
- my salary package was decent - ended with 10 lac annually ( though hardly any savings left :p)

- GRE Q 159 V 157
- TOEFL 111 = 24+28+29+30

So guys ! How should I approach ?

I fear my negatives -
- Gap year after school
- poor grades in college ( lack of motivation, nasty professors, design based course - subjective judgement )
- gap after job
- parents NRIs - ties to country ?
- very niche / unique area. What jobs in country ? ( I will find my type, or have my own startup. I'm not bothered ! )

My positives -
- very niche / unique area - very strong research focus ( can work both ways )
- solid work experience
- stellar recommendation letter(s) - my ex-ceo is an MIT award winner with 2 start-ups under his belt and also *hold your breath* - a TEDFellow. He is my friend, philosopher and guide, and strongly recommends me everywhere.

Phew !

Now how should I approach and what should I write ? What documents should I provide ? Remember, my parents are NRIs - some docs may be hard to get !

Thanks a lot. I hope gkb8062 replies !

first you have to understand that getting visa is just like casino game, sometimes experts miss the chances to win game and sometime stupid guys made a chance to win...

LUCK + GOOD TIME + HARD WORK all play in parallel.

i never used the work CHANCES rather i used PROBABILITY..

ur 10th percentage is fantastic,
ur 12th is again percentage
B.Tech backlog is the biggest problem as it will prove loose of your academic grip.

for any management course at masters level in Canadian university, you must have GMAT score and IELTS/TOEFL score. after MBA there is no logic to go for PG Certificate unless its a very specialized Management course which is not available in your home country. because you have to prove this point to VO that why you are for this course and why only canada not India.. under SPP no SOP is required but you have to prove indirectly with your file to VO..

so already you have done MBA- General then you can go with MBA (HR, Finance, IT, Project Management, Analyst), there are plenty of further specialization of MBA according to your previous education and experience. suppose you have done some degree in Computer Science/ IT then you can go with MBA- IT/ Software Project Management. so explore the MBA major according to your previous education and/or experience.

first you don't need any consultancy help, you will get admission on your academics basis not on the basis of consultancy. you should apply directly to Uni, visit the concerned department/ Graduate school of Uni in which u r willing to get admission and cross check the admission requirement and for a moment forget about your B.Tech backlogs and if you feel they you fulfill all the requirements for admission , try your luck.

and one more thing that doing MBA in canada is the highest costly so think 50 times before moving further.

or if you could find a very specialized Diploma/ certificate course and can prove the VO that this course is best for you instead of MBA as its a specialized course/ major of Business/ Management then again you can try your luck, get offer letter and apply for visa... but one thing don't have any big expectation with visa, may be reject or grant ,, so be prepare and be ready whatever will be the visa outcome.

THIS IS THE WHOLE STORY.

i have seen applicants become so possessive and conscious about visa and it hurt them 100 times more if you are not very conscious... don't close eyes when the reality is on your front..

need to ask again,,, feel free to ping me,, i always try to show the real picture of Visa game...
thanks for your reply

i have a valid reason why iam choosing pg diploma instead of mba iam already having genral mba quaification i have a three year experience in dominos as a assistant manager while studying in uk so i want to develop my career in hospitality thats why iam choosing pg diploma in hospitality in canada
the thing is in uk i have only option i need to do mba in hospitality iam not allow to do pg diploma after mba.so thats why iam choosing canada for pg diploma iam going to make my sop like this .still i need to face the visa rejection for applying low qualification ?
i will provide ielts score in coming month not a problem for me

Hello all,
I have been offered admission into the graduate program at a recognised Canadian university. I completed my M.Sc. in 2009 and thereafter have worked for almost 3 years. I'm from India and I went to apply for a study permit with VFS Global. Now they are asking me which category should I apply to:
1) General
2) University
3) SPP
Please note that I would be provided with funding for the first year which should be renewed depending on my performance. I am infact going for a Ph.D. program. University scholarship would be the way of funding my education there and that's the information I have provided therein.
Kindly advice me which category should I apply to. Neither VFS Global nor the Canadian High Commission could help me in this regard. Please treat this as urgent. Please help.

Hello,
I would like to seek your advise regarding applying study permit to Canada. I would start by giving a brief snapshot of my profile:
10: 85.62
12: 80.80
B.Sc.: 61.25, 1st. division
M.Sc.: 69.60, 1st. division
GRE: 1320/1600
TOEFL: 113/120
I have previously been to the U.S. on an F1 visa wherein I was enrolled for a Ph.D. Program in chemistry. However, I discontinued from the course after 1.5 years die to a severe family mishap.
I have about 3 years of work experience as an analytical chemist with pharmaceutical industries in India.
I applied to the graduate program in chemistry at UVic and got acceptance for conducting Ph.D. studies. I would be getting a scholarship of CS$23,000 per annum. I would be conducting research in analytical chemistry and l have prior experience in analytical chemistry.
Now I have a few questions.
1) Depending on my profile, how good do you think my chances of getting a Visa?
2) Should I apply for General or University study permit?
3) I would mainly be dependent on university scholarship. Do I need to show any other external source of funding?
4) Do I need to undergo a pre-medical before applying for the Visa? Is it absolutely mandatory?
5) Should I apply online? Is there any difference in processing time if I apply online or through paper application?
6) I haven't taken ILEST. Is that a cause of concern.
Kindly let me know if I can attach additional documents to strengthen my case. Moreover, would my sudden exit from U.S. have a negative impact with the VO? I look forward to your expert advise. Please help me. Thank you.

I am currently in Canada on visitor visa with y wife and planning to apply for study permit for me and work permit for my wife along with my study permit request .

I have approached one of public college for admission and they told me that since i am already in canada i can give in house college English test and upon clearing it i can get admission.I have cleared the same and got the admission letter from college.I have opened acc in canada and funded 35000 $ as proof of fund.: is IELTS compulsory for study permit ? or i can apply for study permit with admission letter. Pls let me know if you have any idea about it.

My lawyer suggesting me he will apply study permit from LA. but while one of immigration expert in college suggest me to apply from paris as processing time is much lower than LA.

Pls guiude .....
