Hi all,

Not sure I'm in the right place, so sorry if I'm a n00b! ::)

Im looking to move to Canada for a year but would need to find work to fund my living expenses. I've checked numerous websites and am severely confused! I want to know how easy it is to find work - In a bar or hotel, for example - without a work permit?

Has anyone been in this situation before, or known of anyone who has.

Many thanks!

No - you certainly can't work in a hotel or bar without a work permit. If you do so, you'll be working in Canada illegally.

To obtain a work permit, you must first secure a full time job offer from an employer in Canada. The next step is for the employer to advertise the job for a month to prove no Canadian could be found for the role. Then the employer must pay a $1K fee and submit an application to request approval to hire you. Expect processing to take around 2-4 month. If approval is received, you can then apply for a work permit.

Just to add - it does tend to be difficult to find employers who are willing to go through one month of advertising, pay a $1K fee and then wait a few additional months for processing to hire someone. However some people are certainly successful in finding an employer - so you can certainly try.

There is no other experience. You need a work permit to work in Canada, as mentioned above. No one will hire you without the necessary paper.

if you are found to be working illegally while in canada without a work permit, you are at risk for being banned from canada for a certain amount of time. so, if you want a job in canada, you need to go through the process just like everyone else. all it takes is for 1 phone call to report you, or if at a port of entry, just a slight suspicion from an immigration officer will prompt further investigation. it's certainly NOT worth it.

There are people working illegally in Canada, including bar work but when they are caught, they don't only lose their right to stay in Canada but also something which is known as DIGNITY,RESPECT AND PRIDE.

So beware of the consequences.
