Hi,

I need to know what are the average living monthly expenses for a family of 3 (asian) moderately spending.

I have read many estimates at internet but would like to know any real life experiences from someone who is currently living there.

Thanks

Here are some estimates:

1. rent = 2 bedroom condo/apt ranges from 900-1200 per month
2. gas/heat = about 70 summer can go up to 150 (depending how old the place it)
3. electricity = 70-100 a month
4. cable/phone/internet = bundle package about 100/month
5. food = 500-700 (there are a lot of Asian supermarkets in calgary)
6. school fees = about 200-300 a year
7. buss pass = 100 a month/person
8. gas = $ 1.14 per liter, moderate driving in a month using a mid-size SUV about 200 a month

Are you based at Calgary?

I am about to move to Calgary, staying with a friend till September 30th so looking for an apartment to move by October 1st.Could you please recommend which is the best way to find a house in Calgary? Websites?Realtors?property management Companies?

Do the property Management Companies also charge a fee like realtors?

In addition as I will be a newly landed Immigrant, could you advise please where could I find affordable and economical household items in Calgary such as

1)Furniture[if possible used one]
2)Kitchen items
3)Comforters
4)Some basic electrical appliances

Thankyou for your time.

Hi Newcomer!

I'm from Canmore which is about 45 minutes away from Calgary but I do know Calgary well enough to give you some advise as we always go there in the weekends.

1. For property management companies there are tons: here are some- hopestreet.ca, rentfaster.ca, mcmproperty.com. They don't charge any fee, not that I know of but if you decide to rent from them they require a month's rent for damage deposit and sometimes 500 to reserve the place which will be deducted from your 1st month rent. Most of them require a 6-month or a 1 year lease. You can also try kijiji.ca and craigslist for direct to owner rentals.

2. For furniture, thrift store. Again depends on where in Calgary you will be at. It's the best time of the year to get some good stuff in there as most replace their furniture in the summer. Another site where you can get good deals will be kijiji.ca and craigslist.

3. kitchen, comforters and basic electrical appliances - Ikea, Walmart, Costco and Real Canadian Superstore, they are all over Calgary.

Please pardon me if i sound stupid but when we say that the average rental for 2 bedroom apartment is $ 1000-1400, does it mean the furnished apartment with all basic necessities like furniture, beds, kitchen items etc? or is it just the empty apartment?

Usually that means unfurnished. The apartment will include large appliances (e.g. stove, fridge). But will not include furniture, beds, kitchen items, etc.
