I submitted my application about 1.5 month ago and my reference letter was saying that I have worked 40hrs/week. However, I am very concerned about my reference letter and I'd like to send them an updated letter to distinguish work done toward thesis/RA. Would you please let me know whether it is possible to send an updated reference letter? and how?

Thank you all so much.
You can update your ref letter before the decision is made.

Personally I'm not sure about distinguishing work done toward thesis/PhD. It doesn't make any sense to me.
As you submitted your application recently, they are not going to touch your application for a while. I suggest you to investigate more.
We have had a lot of successful applicants without distinguishing.

I am saying its very confusing for the officer. I know a friend who applied to CEC a year ago and got rejected for the same reason. He claimed 40 hrs in the letter and he got a typical comment like this in the CAIPS notes. He told me that he even sent an updated letter from his superviosr to support the case and distinguish between the working and study hrs but it did not work and he got rejected at the end. i don't know. This case might be different but this what happend with a friend.

The problem is how you can update your ref. Letter without contradicting what you already said. You mentioned in your first letter that you worked 40 hours as an RA and now you are going to say that you worked for example 20 hours as an RA and 20 hours on your thesis. (The hours you worked on your thesis dosn't count and will not give you any points). So, you confirm that you lied the first time. I personaly think that not updating your letter is safer than updating it like this.
If you decided to update it be careful about contradiction.

Under CEC, there is a rule saying that the work experience gained at the same time with study doesn't count. There is not such a rule under FSW but officers are not happy about 40 hour RAs and try their best to find a hole and reject such applications for other reasons.

I know, but the rejection was before applying this rule (The old CEC system did not mention that rule, its recent). Anyway, I am trying to help not to confuse. Good luck.

Just got my GCMS notes...they only looked at my work experience until the day they received my file i.e. 11 Feb 2013. So they counted only that work from 11 Feb 2003 until 11 Feb 2013. They did not consider the work experience after the application was submitted. They gave me points for my wife's education which they hadn't previously. I think the email I sent them stating that helped.

They also made some other weird notes. I finished my degree in india but the officer writes that applicant finished bachelors degree from xyz univ in india and the degree was conferred by anirkaban institute in Iran...;-P...dunno how they made that mistake...

This cannot be emphasized enough: you do not want to contradict your previous letters, and any 'updated' letters should explicitly state that the newer letter is giving more details in support of the previous letter, or supplementing the previous letter, or adding to the information given in the previous letter, or something to that effect.

Your medical clinic is so fast. I did my medical on May 30 at 474 College, but they only submitted on June 13. And my eCas hasn't updated anything.
Where did you take the medical exam?

It was not crowded and once I called they could schedule it for two days after.

Thank you all for the information and cautions. It is a very delicate situation and you're right, I should be very careful. I do not know how to write a letter without contradicting the previous one as I have clearly stated that I have worked 40hrs/week as a graduate research assistantship. So, I should see which one is safer: send or not send at all.

Hey Henry,

I did my medical at 474 college too on May 29 and they submitted on June 13. They said it would take 2 weeks and that was true.
Btw, here are many applicants who got passport request without the update of receiving the medical result on their eCas.. so lets hope to get that email sooooooooon ;)

Did you send the Medical receipt to Ottawa? Is it a good idea to send it or its not necessary?
