Hi
I just moved to Canada as an international student and found a part time job. My studies start on May 6th. My employer sent me some online training courses to complete before I start my orientation. If I complete those online training courses before my classes start would it be illegal. These online training courses are paid.
But my orientation is on my class start date.
Would it be a problem.
Thanks

Yes, that would be classified as working illegally.

My first day on the job will be my class start date. I have to complete online training courses before joining. What should I do?

I understand your employer wants you to do the training before your first day, but completing paid work before your study permit allows could cause issues. A few suggestions:

1. Explain the situation to your employer - most will understand international student rules.
2. Ask if you can do the unpaid training after classes start instead.
3. Or get a written note from them saying the paid training is really an orientation for your first day of work on May 6th.
That way if anyone asks, you have paperwork showing you're not working illegally. I'd hate for you to get in trouble over a technicality. Your education is important, so maybe contact your international student advisor too for guidance. They'll want you to follow the rules.
