Hi all,

I was working with an employer in AB whilst I was on my Working Holiday visa from the UK until it ended last month. If they were interested in hiring me again as a remote worker now that I've returned to the UK, would this be legal? I am working on gaining my PR status but as of right now I am not a PR or even temporary resident of Canada.

I am also legitimately considering setting up a consultancy business here in the UK for my area of expertise. But if I set up this a consultancy business, my only client for now would be my old employer. I am wondering if this would put myself (and any future Canadian PR applications) or my old employer at risk.

Any advice or prior experience relating to any of this would be well received.

Thanks!

Others can comment as well but cannot see why this would be an issue given you are not planning to carry out any work on Canadian soil but just remotely. You would need to agree how they would pay you whether into a Canadian account or transfer to a UK account plus sort out the UK tax implications. Note that none of this work would count as Canadian experience as far as a PR application was concerned. Maybe advisable for the employer to consult professional advice anyway just to ensure they are covered but really seems no different to a company sub contracting work outside of the country which is what it would be.

Maybe post in this forum below as that is more biased to UK people than this one

Above just my personal view by the way

You don't require any permission from Canada to work for a Canadian employer from a different country. Doing so doesn't put anyone at risk.
