Just a quick little query. Some people on this forum have been saying that once they obtained their PR approval and they "land" in Canada it has taken up to two months before they actually obtain the PR card. Do you have to wait until you obtain the card before you can work? Or can you work while waiting for the card? Perhaps there is a temporary PR card?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

You can obtain a SIN card as soon you land in Canada with the help of "Record of Landing" document that is issued to you at the time of entry. Once you have the SIN card, you can start working. You won't need the actual PR card.

hey mmhughes, once you get here you can apply for your SIN card, and even if you don't have your PF card, the documentation you have with you plus your passport (maybe another piece of ID as well) will be enough for you to get your SIN. You can work right away with that and your SIN card, and it arrives to you in the mail shortly after. All employers and temporary agencies accept this as your SIN documentation... don't wory you can even start work 10 minutes after you receive the paperwork for you SIN. Where are you landing? I have some good contacts for agencies etc if you need them ;)

if you are in the toronto area, i can use some good contacts because i need a job as well. i should be landing in february

Same here! If you know any good agencies in Toronto then that would be really helpful! I'm landing on 4th Feb :)

I could do with some good contacts in the GTA too?

Hey ya! Depending on your experience different agencies are better for different people but check out www.optionspersonnel.com and www.hunt.ca - they deal with higher end clients for permanent employment placement in Toronto. There is also adecco, appleone, and randstad for temporary and permanent work.

Another thing to do is set up a linkedin account www.linkedin.com. A lot of employers use this here as you can put your work history, add contacts (quite often they connect in some way to someone you know that can help you) and your contacts can put up your recommendations on there to so employers can see them. This is pretty key when you are on another continent. You can also apply for jobs through there as well.

Let me know how you get on with them and if I can help after you have had a go, I would be happy to!

What about in Montreal - any good agencies there? :D Thanks in advance!

hmmm not sure, I can find out tho ;D

Try www.swift.ca or http://www.siriuspersonnel.com/Positions_available.aspx you can also try www.randstad.ca :)

Thanks so much guys. I'm actually sponsoring my husband. I thought you'd only need a SIN card but my husband wanted me to "make sure". I think he is just fretting that he couldn't work straight away. I actually live in Ottawa and my husband is a tree surgeon/arborist. We've been using the government's "job seeker" website. You can input the area you want to work, your experience, what you are looking for, etc. and they send you an email on a regular basis that include a list of jobs that you can technically apply for. http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/Intro-eng.aspx

Thanks again for everyone's assistance! You guys are great :)

I believe for government jobs you need to be a Canadian Citizen... I was looking for my boyfriend and that was one of the stipulations. However, a lot of those companies I listed can still find you work even if you only have a degree as some places are looking for people out of school. One thing to look into as well as some companies have degree level recruitment, for instance Labatts http://www.ab-inbev.com/go/careers/careers_opportunities/MBA_Recruitment.cfm on an international level so you can apply from where you currently reside. It may be in your best interest to look into companies direct websites for thise tho. Hope this helps!
