Hi, Ive just started working but I would like to clarify things so I can make arrangements with my employer to see if she can accommodate me to have the requirements to apply for permanent residency under the Canadian Experience Class.

I graduated Nursing (4 years) in Canada and got my post grad work permit, and finally am working. I have a Casual position, however I'm working fulltime hours. Basically fulltime except without benefits, paid vacay/sick leave.
I understand that the requirements to apply under the Canadian Experience class requires 1 year of full time hours. Which is 37.5/week

However, a nurse's shift does not work like that.

1 day shift is 11.25 PAID hours out of 12. Fulltime is a maximum of 7 shifts per 2 weeks.
Which brings us to 78.75 hrs per 2 weeks, if divided into two for the 2 week, it would be 39.4 hrs per week.
If it were truly that way everything would be perfect. However the schedule of a nurse does not go that way.

My work sched is like:
1st Week: Mon, Tues, then Fri, Sat, Sunday - 5 days per that week
2nd Week: Wed, Thurs. – 2 days that week.
3rd Week: Mon, Tues, then Fri, Sat, Sunday - 5 days per that week
4th Week: Wed, Thurs. – 2 days that week.

And the pattern goes on. Basically I work 2 or 3 days straight then I would have 2 or 3 days off. Nurses can't work 12 hours and go on for several days in a row without days of rest in between. Has something to do about us getting tierd/burnt out causing our patients at risk for incompetent care. Im tierd by the 3rd morning! So this sched makes sense to me.

Now the problem as you can see, although I worked over 75hrs in two weeks (based on 37.5 per wk), I worked 56.25 hrs on the 1st wk, but only 22.5 on the second week. The second week does quite make it to that 37.5hrs/week requirement.
Now everywhere you go the nurse's full time shift is that way. I can probably negotiate to even out the shift between the two weeks. But since we're only allowed 7 shifts per two weeks so it would be 4 days on the 1st (45 hrs) and 3 days on the 2nd (33.75hrs). Im still going to lack hours on the second week!

So tell me, am I screwed or will CIC given considerations?

It will be fine. As long as you meet the required number of hours of 1950 worked in 12 months or more you will be eligible for CEC.

Really? That's great. I was going to look to do a double job to kill myself with hard labour for a year just so I could apply. :)

hello.. I checked one of your earlier postings and it seems I am having a similar problem as that happened to you before.
May I get in touch with you?

Thank you.
