Worker in Canada on post grad visa soon to expire, applied for PR

We have a skilled worker employed in our company, that is on a post study work visa soon to expire, who has applied for permanent residency. The PR application is in process, but it may not be finalized before the work permit expires. There are a number of options, but it is not clear what the correct one is. Please advise.

He either needs to apply for a closed work permit before the expiry of his PGWP. In order to do this, you'll need to obtain an approved Labour Market Opinion.

Alternatively he can change his status to that of a visitor (but he'll have to stop working).
