my girlfriend is wanting to apply for a work visa, but we also want to get married. She is an American citizen, and I am currently unable to sponsor her for PR, as I am a student and my salary is horrible. we were wondering if while she is here on a work visa if we can get married, or will we have to wait to get married until I can apply to sponsor her for PR?

You can sponsor her for PR once you are either married or common law (common law = have lived together for at least one full year). There are no minimum income requirements for sponsoring a spouse.

You can get married at any time.

I thought that to sponsor you have to be able to provide for them for 3 years, which is why we are putting off her applying for PR, but thanks for telling me that we can get married at anytime, it is good to know.

Yes - you are responsible for your partner for three years after they arrive in Canada. However if you read through the detailed guides, you'll see this means that the sponsored person (applicant) cannot go on social assistance (welfare) during those three years. If they do, the person who sponsored them will be responsible for paying this money back to the government.

Many people here have sponsored a spouse/partner while in school full time. It's completely doable and possible.
