Hi,

My work permit is set to expire in November 2012. I have been living in Calgary for 7 years straight under both a student and then a work visa. At this point I'd like to apply for permanent residency. Do I also have to apply for a new work permit in addition to this?

Any answers would be much appreciated!

Liz

Yes, you will need a new work visa. PR applications will take 12-15 months to process.

Applying for PR does not give you any type of 'Implied Status' in Canada. until PR is granted and you officially 'land' in Canada you have to be covered by the appropriate visas and permits to permit you to reside and work here.
