Hello all,

I am a medical device R&D and Regulatory specialist with project management experience in medical device regulatory submissions. I have an overall experience of about 16 years of experience. Are there jobs available for my type of skill sets? Please suggest. I am currently based in Belgium, Europe and I want to move with my family and likely settle in Canada

So see if eligible to submit a profile for Express Entry based on age, education, experience, language fund funds. If you have a high enough score you may be invited. You need to do a job search, find employer willing to file for a LMIA proving no Canadian has your skills, education etc. Then with LMIA, you apply for a closed work permit.

Not a huge market for your skillset in Canada. Would only move if you have secured a job in your field. Is there a reason you want to leave Belgium?

The main reason is that i am still an expat here and my kid is a special kid with speech delay. With only English language, it is difficult to get appropriate special schools/therapies here in Belgium where these services were offered in the local languages (French/Dutch) for free. So Canada might offer these therapies in English with better quality and ofcourse i am also interested in settling in Canada

So does your child need just speech therapy or other services? Therapies are not free in Canada. You pay out of pocket for speech therapy, OT, mental health, psych, ABA etc. Also depending on the service required, there are waiting lists for many therapy providers so get on lists before you move. Many therapists have closed their current roster to new intakes. For example, I waited one year for my son to get see an OT. What “special schools“ are you looking for? Those would be private as kids with any special needs are in regular classrooms in the public system. There are some specific classrooms in the public system but wait times would be years.

If you want to settle in Canada look at immigration programs like Express Entry. You need to be eligible to submit a profile with ECA and IELTS/TEF

If one of the primary reasons you want to move to Canada is to access specialized services for your child you probably have better options. The system is very overwhelmed by the amount of children needing various therapies and schools have had to cut down on extra support for children who are facing various challenges for budget reasons plus high demand. As already mentioned many therapies are not covered by Medicare (Canada has a system that is around 70% Medicare) so you will be dependent on finding a job that offers an extended benefit plan that you can pay into for extra coverage. Even if you are lucky enough to have an extended benefit plan realistically you will end up paying out of pocket for a lot of the therapy needed because there will be a cap on how much insurance or the province will cover per year. There is huge demand on services for children because there are many more children affected by conditions like autism including speech language pathology. Unless you find a job in your field or have identified many possible employers I would be considering other countries. What is your citizenship? There should be an English international school in every European capital or large centre which may be an option. Belgium is not as English friendly as some of the other European countries. Have you calculated your CRS score and looked into whether you would qualify to immigrate. Are you over 40? It is quite difficult to immigrate to Canada at the moment. There is a huge pool of people who are trying to secure permanent residency at the same time so the scores needed to immigrate are extremely high. Unless your skills have been identified as in high demand like nursing it can be very hard to secure immigration. There is a good chance you may also need proof of securing a job to increase your CRS score high enough and your employer will have to pay to try and secure an LMIA to show that there was nobody in Canada who could be hired. A few years ago you may have been able to secure PR pretty easily but that is no longer the case.

You would need assessments and work with school. Not sure what sort of assistance you are looking for but few children get 1 on 1 assistance and very few school boards have special classes. There may be one or two assistances in the school to help. Also you will be on a waitlist for years to get SP or OT in a school. And even then it may be one session a month or a quarter for 30 minutes. Plan to pay out of pocket for all therapy. People are waiting years for children to get assessed and therapy.

Your score is too low for Express Entry. Current draws are over 500. You need ECA and IELTS/TEF.

Only way to increase score - learn French to B2.

Yes I have A1 level french and will try to go until B2
In the meantime, if your child is on the spectrum then research what is available in Canada. It is out of pocket, and intakes are full for many therapists. It is not covered by the government. Don’t count on the public school system for any support. Or wait years. So cost it out. US has better services.

I am not sure if Canada has a major focus on medical device manufacturing and R&D. There are some companies in Burnaby, but you will have to check if they are hiring. Secondly, your skillset is in project management. Thats a field that is shrinking all over north america with majority of project management folks reskilling to become product management folks. @iSayGoodDay can tell more perhaps?

My kid is on Autistic spectrum but he was born here so he has citizenship by birth. We are South Asian Indians. He also had speech delay as the biggest symptom of Autism. Speech and Behavioural therapy are kind of "over subscribed" in Canada. We were lucky that we were in a relatively smaller city where spots were still open. Quality of service has been great and he has made immense progress. For a five year old, he now communicates completely by spoken words and focus has been shifted to basic written skill development. Typically, you have to drive your kid to therapy and then take him back. So initial few months might be hactic.
