My husband is sponsoring me but i'm applying for a work permit extension. ive submitted both applications at the same time. how long can i expect work permit to be sent back?

Assuming you applied via the inland PR process: Vegreville is currently assessing spousal applications received through Nov 8, 2009 for first stage approval. It takes about 6-7 months for them to get to your application. If you pass the first stage of assessment, you will then be issued your open work permit. Assuming the temporary status you got on entry to Canada was still valid when you sent in your PR ap and the extension request/work permit application, you are under "implied status" to remain in Canada until they finish first stage assessment.
