Hi there I live in uk and may have the opportunity of a job in Canada. However I have a criminal record for possession in uk, will this prevent me getting a work permit? Will they ask for a police check?whats the best thing i can I do to sort this out. All opinions greatly recieved

When did this happen?

You are very likely inadmissible to Canada for five years from the time you complete your sentence. If it's been less than five years, you should speak with an immigration lawyer to see what your options are.

It is only 2 yrs ago... I have been told that if I get an LMO and the apply for the work permit at customs when I land that I should be ok. Do you know if this is the case??

There's a good chance you're inadmissible for 5 years. Having an LMO / work permit does not overcome this.

I would check with a lawyer before spending all of that money to fly over to Canada only to be turned away.

They will ask you if you have a criminal record. (I'd strongly recommend you not lie.) Canada and the UK also share certain information. Although I don't know if this extends to criminal data.
