I know the title is kinda odd, but let me explain the situation. My study permit is expiring at the end of this month which is July 31st. I read articles about renewing study permit outside of Canada (I am studying online in my home country with my DLI due to COVID, and won't have to go back to Canada til 2022 Fall), which basically is the same as applying for a new one with all the medical exam, finger print capturing and pick up the permit at airport process. I checked the only facility that provides medical exam in my country, the earliest spot available is at August 2nd, which my study permit will be expired. In my understanding, if my study permit expires I can pay $200 to restore my status. So I am wondering should I renew my current one with paying $200 more to restore my status after I got the medical exam result, or I should just save that $200 and go apply for a new one? Thanks a lot for the advice!

You need either to apply for the extension or make fresh application if your are changing program of studies/DLI and you intend to come to Canada before end of the program. If you are continuing student and your SP expires, apply for extension. one thing im not sure about is, are you continuing student or you are changing program.. I know you want to save application fee plus other requirements, but restoring status does not apply in your case. and if extension for the duration of online studies toward the end of your program, then why do you have to apply?

I am not changing DLI, the current study permit that I have was applied when I am in another college in 2019, and at Fall 2020 I went into a university. Since at that time I already back to my country due to covid I never make it back to my school to attend any classes except online classes, btw I did change DLI with IRCC after I got accepted. So basically I am still studying, which I am only confused of between choosing to renew or apply for a fresh study permit

if you are continuing student, apply for extension provided you have plan to complete your studies in class. And as you were taking online classes since fall last year, be mindful of the pgwp eligibility if you intend to apply one

That is what I am wondering. Since the expiration is almost there, and my medical exam won't come out before the date. Is that mean the only choice that I left is applying for a fresh one?

Apply for extension before the expiration.
