My girlfriend is coming to Canada in April for 6 months. This is her second trip. Last time was here only a month and we did not buy any medical insurance. I am more concerned this time because of the length of the stay. Should she purchase insurance in her home country before arriving or can we pre-purchase insurance here for a vsiitor on a TRV?

There are lot of Canadian Insurance companies providing temporary and emergency medicare insurance. You can take a policy for her from the date of travelling to the date of her return or she can get one from her country too. Compare the premium and benefits and choose the best. As the insurance coverage is required for the period of her visit/travel in Canada, I would suggest a Canadian Insurance company would be better so that, in case there is a claim, you can follow up.

You can find lot of insurance companies on the web site who provide travel and short term medical coverage.

Me and my relatives in Canada used to take medical insurance for our travels to US and Europe from this company. Their charges are reasonable. Try for a free quote.

However, compare with other companies for your choice.

I would suggest that she gets cover from her country before she travels. If something happens to her near the end of her trip she would need a company that will provide repatriation to her home, it would also cover her belongings if something happened to them, and if her flights were cancelled for some reason.
Some travel insurance companies will only cover you if you are a resident of that country too

Re: Where to get medical insurance for TRV

Hi Wilson:

In addition to the below can you suggest any more places to compare and buy Travel Medical Insurance?

My parents will be visiting me for a little less than 6 months on a TRV thus I was looking to shop for Travel Medical Insurance.

I understand that the AMA also provides Travel medical insurance.

Hi

Try these websites also. Compare the quotes.

Please keep in mind that some plans does not provide coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.
also the applicant should not:
be travelling against the advice of their physician;
have a diagnosis of a terminal illness with less than 2 years to live;
have a kidney condition requiring dialysis;
have used home oxygen during the 12 months prior to the date of application; and/or
have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or any other form of dementia.

However, you have to read about the policy terms and conditions before making any deal.
