What is ghost update?

Hi,

What is a Ghost Update? I have seen many people saying they got ghost update. I have these two questions.

A. Which of the following qualify as ghost update?
B. Which of the following scenarios do not happen at all?

1. You get an email saying application updated and when you log in you see your application as "Application Updated" in CIC, but "nothing" is changed in application progress
2. You get an email saying application updated and when you log in you see your application as "Submitted" in CIC, but "nothing" is changed in application progress
3. You get an email saying application updated and when you log in you see your application as "Application Updated" in CIC, and "something" is changed in application progress
4. You get an email saying application updated and when you log in you see your application as "Submitted" in CIC, and "something "is changed in application progress
5. You do not get any email, but you log in you see your application as "Application Updated" in CIC, but nothing is changed in application progress
6. You do not get any email but when you log in you see your application as "Application Updated" in CIC, and something is changed in application progress
7. You do get any email but when you log in you see your application as "Submitted" in CIC, and "something" is changed in application progress

Only thing which is not a ghost update is

You do not get any email, and you log in you see your application as "Submitted" in CIC, and nothing is changed in application progress
