Hi All,

So I have two questions and it would be really helpful if someone can provide any information on it. So the first is that my PGWP is expiring on 9 April 2016 and I am about to receive a one year full-time contract that starts in August (2015) and ends next year in August (2016). I am curious to find out whether this can present a problem for my employer in terms of them offering me a one-year contract that extends beyond my PGWP expiration date.

Second, so I started a PhD last year in September (its been my dream to pursue this since undergrad but absolutely dislike it now) and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Fall as part of my program's fellowship requirement. It was 210 hours over a four-month period and my question is can this be included as part of my one-year experience?

If I take the TAship into calculation plus all the other contract-based research jobs as well as the new aforementioned contract, there is a good possibility that I have sufficient hours to qualify for CEC before my PGWP expires. I would really appreciate any information on my two questions. Thanks a lot.

Normally, on the first day of work or before that, they will ask you to show proof of your work permit. It will be an alert to the employer when they see your expiry date. You can promise that you will be responsible to extend your work permit on time.

I don't think you will be qualified for CEC under express entry because you need one year continuous work (not counting the period when you have study permit). I believe that you will need study permit when you take PhD; hence, these time as TA won't be counted. You can put in your details now to see if you are qualified to enter the pool.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for responding. Following from your comment, do you know whether any non-school related work experience I gain while holding a study permit alongside a PGWP can count for CEC?

Also, it doesn't have to be continuous work to qualify for CEC. Sorry this is something I just know based on the ridiculous hours I have spent researching immigration options lol.

I don't know if your work experience will be counted when you have both valid permits at the same time. I think if both are valid, you will be fine then.

I am not sure if you have read this:

Can I count my work as a teaching assistant toward the work experience requirement?

You may be able to count experience as a teaching, research or lab assistant at a post-secondary educational institution, (see National Occupation Classification 4012) toward the work experience requirement, depending on the eligibility criteria of the programs.

If after submitting your Express Entry profile you are invited to apply, you must show that you did the job as described in the occupational description of the NOC, meaning that you did all the essential duties and most of the main duties listed. If you do not show that your experience meets the description in NOC, your application will be refused.

To be considered under the Canadian Experience Class:

You cannot count work experience you gained while enrolled as a full-time student. Your work experience must have been gained while on a valid work permit, such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit.

You must have gained the equivalent amount of experience as someone who worked full-time for at least one year (1,560 hours) in the three years before you submit your Express Entry profile.

To be considered under the Federal Skilled Worker Program:

Your work experience must have been full-time (or the equivalent in part-time hours), worked continuously and paid, for at least one year in the same occupation.
