Ways to Speed up Citizenship

I have lived in Canada on Student Visa from 26 Aug 2001 to 31 Jan 2008 then 29 April 2011 to 16 Dec 2012

I had to leave Canada as Dad passed away and I have to take care of his business. I will have to stay out of country for more than a year. My question is there any way to fasten 1095 days requirement for citizenship? Does my previous stay in Canada would be taken into account?

You say you were in Canada on a student visa. You cannot go from student visa to citizenship, you must become a permanent resident first.

If you are a PR, the answer is no, your previous stay cannot be considered. They only look at the 4 years immediately prior to when you apply and you must be resident in Canada for 3 of those years (which is 1095 days). There is no way around that.

By my calculations, you have accrued 596 days in the period that you quoted between 2011 and 2012.
Assuming that you were to start adding more days from today, with no breaks at all in residency, the earliest that you could apply from would be Mon Aug 25 2014 as this would add 499 more days.

I may be a day or two out, but that's about it. Of course, if you were not to start adding from today, the date would be shifted by the lost days. HOWEVER, you will reach a point that the days accrued in 2011 will start to drop off the bottom end and then you will be needing a MUCH longer time to qualify. To avoid this, you would have to start adding new days before Dec 16 2013 or you will run out of any possibility of adding enough new ones before 29 April 2015.

Someone check my maths please... I could easily have made an error.

Do the calculation using CIC calculator. Based on my rough calculation you are short of approximately 8 months if you come baack today. On December 16 you were only 66 days away!!

Are you calculating for 730 days in 5 years (the PR requirement) or 1095 days in 4 years (the citizenship requirement)?

1095 in 4 years - the citizenship requirement. I assumed one gets half a day for stay before landing.

Checked.. I missed that out of the calculations but was the OP actually in Canada before he got his PR?

I must say the facts are not 100% clear. This is why i recommended OP to use CIC residency calculator. I assumed he only left Canada on December 16 2012.

In his first post he gave the dates that he says he lived in Canada and then in his second post clarified that the second block was as a PR. Running the calculator with this in mind, I get the same values as I worked out by hand. Want to re-check?

I agree with zardoz. :)

This is what I got from the residence calculator:
According to the information you provided, you meet the basic residence requirement but you have not been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) in the four years (1,460 days) preceding the date of your application.

According to the information you provided and assuming nothing else changes, you will accumulate 1,095 days of physical presence on 2014-08-24.

Arrival date: 2011-08-26
PR date: 2011-04-29
application date: 2013-04-29 (used this as a reference, b/c you must be a PR for at least 2 yrs and have 1095 days to be eligible)
basic residence: 1095 days
time spent in jail: 0
days absent: 481.5
physical presence: 614 days

According to the calculator, you will be eligible 2014-Aug-24 - assuming you are in Canada from tomorrow and do not leave again.

Hi Halloum and Zardoz,

Thanks a million for the reply. Yes I WAS in Canada before I got PR from 26 Aug 2001 to Jan 2008 on Student Visa then as PR I was in Canada from 29 April 2011 to 16 Dec 2012. My dad passed away and left lot of debt, I am out of the country clearing the mess. God knows how long will it take to clear the mess. Does any days BEFORE I got PR count? It is outside 4 year period. The calculation by Halloum is confusing me.

You can't count any time at all that is older than 4 years before the date of citizenship application. Sorry...

Your previous time will not count.

You are already out of Canada and have said you will be out for a year. The following shows for exactly one year's absence

Arrival: 2011-04-29
Absence from 2012-12-16 to 2013-12-16 (365 days absent)
Physical presence: 1095 days
Eligible: 2015-04-29

However, if you stay in India longer than 1 year (even only 1 day longer), you will have to restart the entire 3 year count. In this case, for every additional day you gain after you arrive back in Canada, you also lose one previous day that falls out of the 4 year limit. This causes your physical presence to stay at 1094 days until you have been back in the country for the full 3 years.

Arrival: 2011-04-29
Absence from 2012-12-16 to 2013-12-17 (366 days absent)
Physical presence: 1094 days
Eligible: 2016-12-17

Use the calculator, put in all the different dates and it will show you. https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/startBasicCalc.do
