Can I volunteer in a shelter (for example) if I don't have a work permit? They don't pay me or anything at all, it's just volunteering and helping out without any financial reward.

I asked my international advisors on campus last year and the said no. I wish I could have. In particular on christmas and new years.

Yes, you can but only in a non profit organization, in 2012 I was studying an english course and I was seleted to work as a volunteer in JVS Toronto, every friday for 8 hours, and they gave me a diploma.
