I am currently a student at a Canadian university and my parents had applied for visitor visa. Today they got their visa but the issue is that the visa is only valid for 8 months i.e. the visa expires on the same day as my study permit. Is there any particular reason for such short term for the visa and what are the fees associated with renewal. Is it advisable to renew the visa after the 8 month completion period??????

Thanks

If they stated they were visiting you as a purpose of visit then that is expected. There is no reason for them to have a longer TRV if you are expected to leave the country at that point in time.

Look for fees and other related stuff in cic website.

TRVs can't be extended, they have to be renewed. If your parents are in Canada at the time of the expiration of their visitor status you can extend their visit. Please look into the CIC website for further details.

The validity of the visa (trv) is decided by the consulate and it varies from case to case. for your understanding the sticker afixed on your parents passport is valid for 8 months.
- if it is single entry trv then it means that hey can travel towards canada (and seek entry) only once anytime during the validity of the visa(trv)
- And if it is a multiple entry type then they can travel towards canada (and seek entry) multiple times during the validity of the visa (trv).

i have used the word "travel towards canada" to make you understand the concept of TRV (visa sticker). a visa sticker (TRV) is just an authorization which allows you to travel towards canada and seek entry into canada at any port of entry (canadian airports or land boarders etc). By having a visa on your passport does not mean that you can stay in canada all the time or will be granted entry into canada. once a person present himself in front of an immigration officer, it is the immigration officer who decides how much time the visa holder should be granted to live/stay in canada by stamping the passport. So its the entry stamp which gives you the status or define the time allowed to stay in canada. usually it is upto only 6 months unless the officer decide to limit the time to few weeks or months.

Now lets assume your parents visa (TRV) is valid from October 2015 till June 2016. lets also assume they plan to travel towards canada on Feb 2016. they will be allowed to stay in Canada till August 2016 ( i.e 6 months stay no matter the visa sticker expires during this time). So in-short every entry/trip has a limit of 6 months to stay in canada. Even if a person holds a 5 years multiple visa he can only stay for 6 months per trip/entry.

Yes if they want to stay longer or extend their stay in canada beyond 6 months due to some reasons they can apply for that while they are here in canada and before their visitor's status expires ( application to extend stay in canada as a visitor) But NOTE the TRV (visa) will not be renewed. on approval of extension they will get a visitor record document.

hope it helps you understand how visa validity works.
