Visitor to worker (need help)

I submitted my sponsor application back in 2014 and I'm still waiting and going back and forth, my husband is approved to sponsor me but still waiting on me for PR. I'm here on a 6 month visitor visa that I update every 6 months with no problem. However, I never thought about doing an open work permit with my application. How would I go about going from a visitor visa to a work permit, or would I still have to be on a visitor visa and just have my OWP? Any help would be appreciated..
