I am an American and I am married to a Canadian. I am in Canada right now so that we can process my immigration papers. Would it be acceptable to apply for the spousal inland sponsorship if I submit a visitor record application to extend my stay? Should I state that on my application that I intend to extend my stay to have legal status here while my papers process? Should I submit the visitor record application first before submitting the spousal sponsorship application? We are also planning on applying for an open work permit for me as well. Thank you.

You can, certainly.

If you're applying for the spousal sponsorship with an OWP, you can benefit from "implied status" while you wait for the decision on the work permit. You don't strictly speaking need a visitor record in that case unless your six-month (or shorter, if your passport was stamped) admission to Canada is close to expiry; in that case, you want the visitor record for safety's sake.

Thank you so much! Also, I was born in the Philippines. It asks for the original of my birth certificate. Is a certified true copy acceptable? Thank you.

I’m kind of in the same situation.
My work permit expired in November, so I applied for visitor record and got married in December. Right now I’m still working on my sponsorship but almost finished. On February 28th I received an email with approval of my visitor record but they gave me 6 weeks only till April 16th. I’ll apply my sponsorship application by that time for sure but how can I stay in Canada after April 16th? Does somebody know? Really need your help

Are you applying inland with an OWP?

Apply for another visitor extension a few days before expiry and include proof of the sponsorship app.

Yes inland with OWP
Somebody told me they went to the border and extend their visitor record there. What do you think about it?

Border runs are risky. CBSA doesn't like visitors living in Canada. You are better off applying for an extension online. Did you explain in the last extension app that you were getting married and applying for sponsorship?

I just said in my last app that I’m getting married

You should have specifically stated that you were applying for sponsorship. You likely would have gotten a longer extension.
