Hi everyone,

My child is on visitor permit till end of this month, which he had got based on my closed work permit (my closed wp also expires at end of March).

Currently I have also a IEC work permit. But as you may know, on IEC wp one cannot have dependents (so I cannot apply for vsitor permit for my child based on my IEC permit).

My child has US passport. Can I go to Canada-US border and flagpole with my son and get him a visitor permit as he is US citizen who enters Canada (flagpolling), as Americans can come to US and stay I guess 6 months as visitors?

I appreciate any help.

I mean my idea is to let my child re-enter Canada, and get visitor permit as a US citizen, independent of my status.
Is that possible?

US Citizens do not need a tourist visa or visitor permit to enter Canada. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas-all.asp#eta-exemptions

Your child can stay there for 6 months, go to the US for a day or two, and re-enter again. The 6 months begin anew.

Thanks very much. There are two things:

- I cannot go to US (don't have US visa or anything), but should be able to go with him only to flagpole over the border.
- My child needs some document like visitor permit to be able to keep going to school (school usually requires that). That's why I want to hopefully get him a piece of document at the border.

Do you mean US citizen CAN NOT get Canadian visitor permit, because they simply can stay in Canada without that? My child has had visitor permit before, but based on my work permits.

Apply online to extend your child's status. It is safer than doing a border run.

Thanks.
Why is it safer to do it online?
And by the way, can I even do it online while my own status cannot be used to support my child's status extension. I thought by going to border we may be able to do it, because my child can 're-enter' Canada.

Apply online that is the safest way and also if you apply online he will get 54 days implied status as current processing time and I hope before that you will get PR. I did same for me and my wife.

Higher chances of approval online. Higher chances of issues if you try a border run. Whether your child is allowed back into Canada or not is at the discretion of the CBSA officer. A US passport does not guarantee entry into Canada.

Someone told me if I apply online while I somehow know that I'm not eligible, it is misrepresentation. That's why I thought it's probably better to go to border.

I am on my way to the border. I'm going first to ask the officer if we can do this, and if so I will flagpole with my child.
Hope it will work.

It is not misrepresentation in any way. Besides, you are basically doing the exact same thing by going to the border, asking CBSA to grant the child status because you are working in Canada.
