Visit Canada from Vietnam through a friend's sponsor

My mother intends to visit Canada for a few weeks to visit her friend in Canada.
I would like to ask if it is possible to apply for temporary visitor visa through her friend's sponsor? If possible, what are the required documents? My mom is retired, she was a small vendor in the past so there is no evidence of employment.
