Tom,

I am very happy your process is finally over and your family can start fulfilling these great life plans you have made!!! I am sure many people on this forum feel the same since you have been such an amazing support to all of us. I wish you all the luck in the world! And I am hoping we will have a chance to meet in July while you're still in Ontario.

Cheers!

PS. I am just looking at my passport with the immigrant visa and COPR... almost unreal after all this time!

Could you let me know if you remember when you landed in canada
If you filled out a permanent resident form ahead of time and gave it to the officer after arrival
Or they do it once you come? Also if you have done in in advance what form did you fill out
I fould the form IM5444 but i could knly fill out the first page
Other 4 pages dont apply or im missunderstanding something :)
Any info will be very hepful
Thanks :)))
BumbpAhead I know when my husband moved to Canada last year he only fill the form what they gave you to Canada to declare what he I bringing , and what kind of citizenship he is , they will give you that form on the plane ,
When he arrived in Pearson officer gave him the forms to sign nothing to fill up , and also he took picture of him , he welcome to Canada , and give some books what you can do to Canada .
I don't think you need to fill up any IM544 forms, cuz that you filled when you applied

Seriously now Milan? Which part of the city should I look for in the beginning..I mean at the time where I would be alone renting a room for a couple months before wife's and baby arrival...I need to be in an area that I don't have to walk miles to get to a bus, and where I won't be mugged in the street and where I won't have to pay an arm and a leg just to rent a small room with a bath.

Com'on guys...give me your lights

tom
The map is correct. Don't go to the Northeast. Marlborough, Sunridge, Forest Lawn, Franklin... The area East of Deerfoot (in the North) is really bad. There are some streets which are an exception but don't risk it. I had a friend living there and I don't know how many times he told me that something happened there.

It depends how close to downtown you want to live. The closer you live the more you have to pay. I live in in the North, about 25-30 minutes walk from downtown (on the map it's marked as Little Italy). I love the location. Close to everything: Grocery stores, downtown, restaurants, 3 malls, the Trans-Canada-Highway to the Rockies and most important to us: we both can walk to work. We got really lucky with the location. We only have one car and don't need bus tickets. That saves us a lot of money.

I can't tell you much about living in the South. I'm never down there, only when I go to IKEA or my dentist ;-)

Some of my friends live in these cookie cutter communities outside of the city. They all have their community grocery store but if you want to go somewhere else it's quite a bit to drive. The bus routes are not as well organized as in Europe and some trips from A to B take forever. I live in the same street in which I work (3.5km away). It takes me 35 minutes to walk, it would take me 45 minutes by bus (3 buses in total).

So if you look for a place always check the distance to other parts of the city including grocery stores and potential employers. Think about if you want to save on rent but need two cars or if you want to pay more for living but be closer to everything. My friends in the outside communities have a lot of trouble in the winter to get out of there because streets are not cleared.

If you have a choice then stay in the southwest maybe even northwest. Closer to downtown and c-train access. Little apple is right the bus system isnt that great. A 10 minut drive from lakeview to peagan/barlow take 1.5-2 hours by bus hahahahaha

If your job hunting you might be all over the city. Will you have the rent a car from ontario?

Sorry - I have to comment on this - I live in Forest Lawn and have been for a year and a half now. And i am still alive haha! My apartment is really nice and new. I have never had any incidents or have felt in danger ... so I guess its individual. The only thing about forest lawn is that it is very multicultural :D :D But yes, it is known to be the ghetto of Calgary haha

Your right Forest lawn has some nice parts to it and they have cleaned it up a bit...but that stretch of 17th ave is still shady hahahaha. Its like Inglewood and they re-vamped it and its now expensive and trendy neighbourhood in the last 10 years. Forest lawn has houses on huge lots and wouldnt suprise me that in a few years the start building expensive in-fills. They dont want calgary to spread anymore but have the inner core more densely populated like marda loop, garrison woods and now altadore.

My parents-in-law live there, too. In a nice quiet street with nice houses :D

Oh definitely there are shady parts and crazy people! I rented an apartment here because it’s cheap and the apartment is very nice. When it comes to buying real estate I will definitely look for a nicer area - I just want to say that someone new coming to Calgary can find the prices of renting pretty high, and living in the ghetto to get settled in is not that bad :) at least in my case :) :)

Welcome to da hood, yo! 8)

Our last couchsurfers looked at a place close to Franklin last week. They were shocked when they came back. Then we looked at two places together in downtown and they were even worse ???
But now they rent a nice room in a condo at the riverfront in downtown. It's really nice but not cheap.

Before we bought our new condo we lived in the basement suite of an old house in the NW. It wasn't the nicest place but in a quiet cul-de-sac close to downtown. $650 incl. all utilities and internet. The price was amazing for the location. Sometimes you can get really lucky

@ Little_apple, Thank you Vanessa.Very informative!I still do not have a clue where to go as I am coming in clueless and jobless :)

@Milan. I will rent a car only for the week I stay in Ontario. I will fly to Calgary with a domestic airline...When I get there I will depend on the bus and C-train for a while as a car rental would not be an option for me!
