I am in a dilemma, obviously we have all see these posts and here I go again, the question for me is not really Canada vs. another country. We all know the pros and cons (pros list is longer I would say for Canada compared to other countries). My question revolves around the work ethic and experience in Canada. I realize this experience can vary depending on city and I am mostly talking about Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa.

I am in I-banking in NY and like my job albeit very stressful and long hours! I wonder if there are I-banking related jobs in Canada (sounds silly question, pardon me!). How is the work ethic i.e.: people take their job seriously, do we see the benefits of hard work , I know in NY you can reap benefits of your hard work etc.

The second part to my post, how to go about doing interviews? I use LinkedIn and all that but how can we complete interviews ( I am open to travelling to Canada if needed for interviews) and negotiate salary? Are they strict about Canadian experience (I know some US employers are fussy about local experience).

I would love to hear any experiences, positive and negative, so we all are prepared and can learn from others.

P.S.: Before you start grilling me on the why Canada question, let me tell you I have done extensive investigation on Canada : the economics, world politics, culture, cost, t axes, healthcare, safety crime, weather. Also, I am on a work visa here and potentially for another 7-8 years; oh and I am fluent in French!

It's very similar to NY. If you want to work in banking, you need to focus on Toronto. Forget about Ottawa and Montreal.

Are you a non-PR who is looking to secure a banking job in Canada along with a work permit? If so, are you American (i.e. someone who qualifies under NAFTA)?

Scylla, thanks. I am a PR. I hope that makes it a little simpler!

Yes - that makes things simpler. Aim for Toronto if you want the most opportunity for career growth. Forget about Montreal.
