I have applied for family sponsorship for my Wife.

On November 5, 2012, she got an email from Immigration Section, High Commission of Canada, New Delhi asking her to submit her passport.

Now I live in Canada and my wife lives in USA. So, regarding this I have few questions which are as follow:

Question 1:

How should we submit the passport? Is this okay if she directly mail her passport from USA through some courier service?

Question 2:

She is going to INDIA in January. If she submits her passport by November End then will she get her passport back before January 10, 2013?

For how much time, NEW DELHI hold the passport?

Question 3:

Lets say she submits her passport in November and before January 10, 2013 she does not get her passport back then if she wants to travel to INDIA then can she get some kind of travel (Emergency Landing) document so that she can travel?

Question 4:

She is traveling to INDIA in January 2013; she got the leave only for a month. Basically she has to travel back to USA by End of February. So is it okay if she submits her passport around February end?

Or if she submits passport around 20th January, 2013 then can she get her passport back before February 20, 2013 ?

Question 5:

Is it possible that we submit her passport at the time of VISA stamping. Instead of submitting passport now while you do the process, is it possible that at the time of stamping you can notify us to submit the passport?

Please advice
Thank You in advance
JP

1) As I understand it, your wife's passport is NOT allowed to cross international borders without being in possession of whom it was issued to. DON'T attempt to mail or courier it there.
2) No one can guarantee anything, albeit ND VO seems to be very quick about that.
3) That would be up to New Delhi authorities, but I would doubt that very much. Even airlines would not likely allow air travel without a passport.
4) How long was she given to submit it? XX number of days added to date of letter you can calculate that. She could inquire about that possibly once over there.
5) I may have read ONE post of this forum a while ago along those lines, anyone having experience with please jump in.
Anyone with better suggestions, please do so. (At least now your thread is at the top again.)

Check the passport. If it's an Indian passport, somewhere inside you should find the following statement:
"Passport should not be sent out of any country by post. It should be in custody either of the holder or of a person authorised by the holder."

There's probably zero chance of that happening. The end of November is the beginning stages of the Christmas mail rush around the world. Every letter and every package will take longer than usual to arrive at their destinations. So for that reason, if she really needs it back by January 10, I would say she better hold on to it UNLESS she can make alternate arrangements and have some kind of guarantee that she'll get it back in time.

My recommendation would be to tell her to go and find the nearest Indian embassy or consulate where she lives, and speak to somebody there and explain the situation. They have the ability to transport her passport through diplomatic pouches/bags which come and go from consulates on a daily or weekly basis. That's a safe way to ensure it arrives in India on time, BUT it doesn't guarantee that she'll have it back by January 13.

The safest thing for her to do is to find out if there's any kind of deadline as to when the passport needs to be received, and then make a decision based on that.

I agree with Tuyen & Truesmile comments about your questions.I would like to add one more thing about your dates i.e if you submit passport in Nov or Dec and you expect to receive by the Jan and Feb I tell NO ONE CAN ANSWER THIS AND NO ONE CAN GUARANTEE THE TIME FRAME FOR PASSPORT BACK FROM NEW DELHI OFFICE.Also New Delhi Office requests passport very early and before start of processing the application.I read some posts here where people requested to send there passports at the end of the processing i.e near to issuing of Visa but that will delay the process a bit more...So plan accordingly

In my case its been 50 days since I sent my passport and I have not heard anything from New Delhi...I see people here on forum with three months,4 months and plus and waiting to get there passports back from New Delhi. Its just unpredictable....Good luck

Perfect! The previous post is exactly the valuable information needed for the OP to make an informed decision . . . current and ongoing personal experience. Good one!

On a related note, I will be staying with my husband at the time I submit my passport (in Canada). Do I have to submit it in the US? Because if I do, I can't go back into Canada. Also, in that case, should I apply inland? I have heard that the times are more equivalent now but I was leaning toward outland.
