Hi there,
I have a question and would like to get some information to help a friend. He is here in Canada on his Young Professional Visa which is, as I understand it, connected to his employer. So his employer just told him that the employment will be terminated with the end of 2012. Does that mean that he then has no permission to stay in the country? Can he get that changed somehow?
I would be very grateful if anyone can give me some hints on what his chances are, what to do best.... perhaps some of you had the same experience and know what to do. I would just like to sit down with him tonight and tell him something helpful or guide him a bit.
Thanks a lot guys.

Hi
His working permit will end in Decemebr 2012?
If he want to stay, he can appply for visitor visa. apply now and he will get in December.

Hi and thanks for the swift reply.
His employment ends by the end of December, his visa is valid until March I think. But as he said it is connected to the company and just valid as long as he is employed by this company. And he needs a work visa and new work, he needs money to be able to stay here!

As long as he has a valid work permit, he can stay until it expires but can not use it to work for another employer. Now is the time to begin looking for new employment(preferably skilled) and an employer willing to apply for a LMO(labor market opinion) for him. If it's approved, he can apply for a new work permit. Applicants who are visa-exempt to Canada can apply for work permits at the border.

If he is not able to find a job before the end of November, he could apply to change his status to visitor(not permitted to work). This will allow him stay in the country legally while he searches for work.

He doesn't have to change to a visitor, as he his work permit is valid until Mar/13.

Hi guys,
so PMM you are confusing me now, and I think SenoritaBella sounds more realistic...
Anyway, I think it is all done and he gave up and will go back to his homecountry on christmas. He does not have any saved money that would allow him to search for a job for a month or two and not earn anything....
Thanks anyway for your answers and tips. Very appreciated.
Cheers

PMM is right... I made an error in my original comment. It should have been:

"If he is not able to find a job before the end of February, he could apply to change his status to visitor(not permitted to work). This will allow him stay in the country legally while he searches for work."

As for your friend, that's still a good option. However, there are still over 60 days left before end of December and he may just find a job by then.
