I am a Filipino citizen but working in China. I have a boyfriend who's a Canadian citizen and he wants me to visit him in Canada. What's the best way to get in Canada? Should I apply for tourist visa? I know that a common-law sponsorship will not work coz we just started two months ago. In case that we decided to get married will he be able to sponsor me right away? Thanks!

You can try to get a visa, but it's not a guarantee. Check out the visitor section of the forum for help in submitting a solid tourist visa application.

If you get married, then as soon as all the documents are ready, he can apply to sponsor you. If you only started the relationship recently, be prepared to submit a lot of proof that it is genuine.

Base on my limited experience (my now wife, being refused for Visitor Visa in 2013) and casual studies, my feeling is that the CIC refuses more visitor visas than it approves from China - unless you can show a very compelling profile of ties to your current residence and reasons that you will in fact return there within the 6 month limit of the visa.

Here is some useful info http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/evaluation/visitor_visa.asp

Personally, I wouldn't get married that quick because it's so soon after you've started dating that it would cause serious red flags if I were an officer. It would seem it's a marriage of convenience to get into Canada. I would take the time, gather more proofs and wait a little while before marrying and filing. Go onto the CIC website to be sure whether or not you need a tourist visa based on where your passport is issued. But keep in mind, you may have a hard time obtaining one. At this point, the only option you have basically is to visit in Canada ( or have him visit you) as at the moment, he can't sponsor you.
