The 3 years undertaking doesn't apply to sponsoring parents. A new PR can sponsor their parents immediately as long as their spouse meets the Canadian income requirement.
Thanks for that clarification.

And you will be responsible for them for the next 20 years. (If I got that correctly from the current policy)
Seriously???!!!
I thought for kids it was 120 months and for spouse, it was 36 months...

Why would Canada bring in seniors that require government financial support? They will already receive free healthcare without paying into the tax system during their working years.

I have never heard about 120 months.
I think spousal and their dependents are all 3 years.

It's here:

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5772-application-sponsor-parents-grandparents.html
scroll down to read this and more about parent sponsorship. It's a big commitment.

"The undertaking ensures that these persons and their family members do not have to apply for social assistance. The length of undertaking for sponsorship of parents, grandparents and their accompanying dependents is 20 years.

Your obligations as a sponsor begin as soon as the person you are sponsoring and, if applicable, his or her family members, arrive in Canada."

If you meet the income requirements and if you are selected through the lottery - then yes.

The parents will also have to pass a medical to be approved.
What if my wifes parents have a medical issue then what .... what is the route then ?

Depending on the severity of their medical issues - PR may not be possible.

Some families unfortunately have to wait until one parent passes away before being able to enter the PGP lottery. Parents can have minor health issues it is larger more expensive health issues that are the big issue.
