UK to Canada - International driving licence?

Anyone knows if we need to obtain an IDL before immigrating, or can we drive on a UK driving licence card? Thanks for your replies

can't say about other states, but Alberta allows you to drive on IDP / you county's DL for 3 months for Permanents residents and 1 year on IDP only for temporary residents after they enter Alberta. E.g. if you were in Ontario for initial 5 months and did not secure a DL, and then enter AB, you will be allowed to drive for 3 months.

This rule expires at the end of 1 year of entry into Canada...

this was the rule back in 2007. Not sure if thing've changed now...

In AB, if you didn't have your license for 2 years, they would give you a GDL license. You can still drive with it, just means you have to maintain a zero alcohol level and you lose your license at about half the demerit points allowed for a regular license. Other provinces, I don't know, rules differ. Best for him to look up the rules for the province he wants to live in.

Thanks for your replies. Just wanted to share the news that the London embassy have now asked for our passports in order to issue our visas, we can't quite believe it after the wait!! To give other UK applicants an idea of how long it took: we filed our application in sept 06, got our receipt and file number in december 06. Then nothing until dec 08 when we got the medical forms, and now it looks like we should get the visas in the next 3-4 weeks. Good luck to all !!
