My husband and I are co-sponsoring my father. My mother (his spouse) is already a Canadian citizen living abroad and will not accompany him to Canada.

The guidelines from Guide 5772 (Application to sponsor parents and grandparents) say the following when determining family size:

"How many people do you want to sponsor? Include
  • the principal applicant (foreign national)
  • the principal applicant’s spouse (even if separated, in most cases) or common-law partner
You must include all the above family members, even if they will not come to Canada with your parents or grandparents and even if the family members are permanent residents of Canada or Canadian citizens."

based on the abvove, can someone please help me determine my Family Size?
Would it be Myself, My Husband, My Father and My Canadian Mother, four people in total? how is it possible that I'm sponsoring a Canadian citizen? That seems a bit off.
Or would it be just me, my husband and my father, so just three people as the family size?

-----------------------------------------

Assuming my Canadian mother should be counted and my family size is four then I'm sponsoring two people. When I try to enter that number under the Number of Current Undertaking (Box 3A in form 5769), it says this number should match the "Number of persons included in box#3 of IMM0008 under the section Application Details"

there's no real box#3 in IMM0008 since it's an online form now. However, there seems to be a contradiction as this IMM0008 online form indicates that only non-canadian citizens should be listed as dependents:

"You must provide details about each of your family members, whether they will come with you to Canada or not. You must include your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, and all of your dependent children, and those of your spouse or common-law partner, who are not already permanent residents or citizens of Canada."

If I ignored the contradiction and entered my mother as a dependent in IMM0008 web form, the online profile application auto-generates an IMM 5406 form that asks for her siblings and children's information and other questions which shouldn't apply to to her because she's not an applicant. She already has citizenship.

based on this, if the answer to the family size question in IMM5786 is four and we'll be sponsoring both parents (2 people), should I list my Canadian mother in IMM0008 as a dependent?

Appreciate your insights and help.

Would be easier for your mom sponsoring your father instead. Undertaking will be reduced from 10 years to just 3.

Yes. I don't think many would have experienced this situation. And I don't know the right answer to fill in the form.

It's actually 20 years now for parents undertaking.

And no need worry about family size (as in spousal sponsorships).
