I am currently putting together a TRV application with my wife for her to come stay with me in Canada. We are planning to ask for a month as we don't want to push our luck too much.

If the visa was granted, and the officer issues a TRV valid for say 1 year, would it look bad on our PR application if she simply didn't return on the date we specify on the application form and stayed for the entire validity of her visa?

The validity of the visa isn't how long she is allowed to stay. How long she is allowed to stay is determined by the CBSA officer at the border. Typically they give out the maximum (6 months) - but not always.

I agree, visitor visas are usually valid for 6 months. So that's probably what you'll get. (Unless her passport expires in less than six months. If it does, then the visa will be valid until one month prior to her passport expiry date.)

Thank you for your reply.

I am aware it is up to the CBSA officer but I definitely overlooked the fact that they are typically given 6 months. I suppose I should have worded my question a bit better.

What I want to know is if her TRV application says she will return one month after her arrival as her planned visit and she instead stays for the entire time she is given and maybe even subsequently then applies for an extension would that affect her PR application in any way?

As long as she stays in status, everything is fine. I originally came to Canada on a WHV, then applied for a 6-month visitor visa, which was granted with no problem. During that time, I got married to my Canadian husband. Since my visa was about to expire before I had all the documents for my PR application, I applied for a 1-year visitor visa extension, which was also granted.

As mentioned by teekatze, as long as someone stays in Canada on a legal status, there's no problem. Once your spouse get her PR approved she can do landing in Canada itself if she will be here on visitor visa. Only thing is to avoid overstay without any legal status. I don't think there can be any problem in future if they find that your wife stayed longer than what she mentioned in her application. Plans can change with time, they understand that.

Although it isn't exactly the same situation you seem to believe that if she is in status everything is fine.

What I was worried about is asking for a month visit and then her stay for as long as she can. I just have this thought in my head that CIC would be thinking "she said she was only coming for a month but actually never went home"

Thank you for your answer to my question.

We would never jeopardize our PR application by having her out of status, and what I was trying to find out was about if she stayed longer than what was mentioned in the application.

Thank you for your insight, and I suppose it is plausible that once she arrived plans changed and she then wanted to stay longer.

well I guess everyone does the same. they apply for a short visit then they stay in Canada on visitor visa till they get PR visa.

This is not a problem. Beforehand, when applying for a TRV, they want proof of ties to the home country. But once the applicant is in, they can stay longer than they said they would, and can apply to extend their stay. CIC is used to this, and does not take it as a sign of insincerity.

Ok, thank you! It's gonna be an uphill battle to show ties lol
