Hey all! We received P2 and are expecting ECOPR within (hopefully) 4 weeks. My spouse wants to travel home to Europe for a week in November for a birthday. What if we don't have our PR cards by that time? is an ECOPR enough? Normally to travel to canada we only need an ETA, no visa or anything. I feel like applying for PRTD would be useless as it takes just as long as it takes to issue PR cards? Hoping someone can give guidance!

Let us start with what the COPR is not, it is not a travel document. Says so on the front of the paper. This means that you have to have a visa and the accompanying purpose - work / study / visitor record. ETAs and TRVs are temporary resident travel documents. Once your COPR is issued you no longer have a temporary status to use those facilities. So as a permanent resident, your travel documents are PR card and PRTD, that's it!

These are your choices:

1) Return to Canada by air with valid PR cards.
2) Return to Canada by air with valid PRTDs.
3) Fly to the US and then re-enter Canada through a land border using a private vehicle and your COPR.
