Travelling outside of Canada while waiting for visa

Hello!
I would like to ask. I am in Canada now. I had an open work permit (based on my common-law partner's visa). It has expired in October, 2017. I have applied for Visitor visa, to extend my stay (I am also planning to apply for PR, but I am still collecting the documents). My Visitor visa still wasn't approved. Can I travel outside of Canada (U.S.) and return without a problem? Of course I have eTA.
Thank you in advance!

There's never guarantee you will be allowed back into Canada (that decision is up to the CBSA officer you encounter at the border). Chances are very high you will be allowed in without issues - but there's always some chance you won't.

If you have an eTA, it means you hold a visa-exempt passport. So you have applied for visitor status extension, not a visa.

Once you leave Canada, your request for extension will be considered abandoned and cancelled. So when you attempt to return, CBSA will assess you as a fresh entry to Canada. If you simply get your passport swiped and allowed in, that means you'll have a fresh 6 months status.

I ment, that I have eTA (because during the time I had open work permit, I was travelling outside the Canada and I had to have an eTA, so I still have it). But as my work permit expired I applied for visitor visa - it still wasn't approved. That's why I am confused now and I'm not sure if I can travel outside of Canada and return back.

What passport do you hold?

Your passport is visa-exempt, meaning there is no such thing as a visitor visa for you. What you have applied for is extension to your visitor status, NOT a visa.

AS mentioned, you can leave Canada and then return on your visa-exempt passport with eTA. The extension to status you've applied for, will be cancelled when you leave. Upon re-entering you'll be assessed by CBSA at that time for entry.
