I drove to the US from Canada, and at the land border, I was just waved in when I showed my Nexus card (I'm an Indian citizen). I did not receive any I-94 this trip (though I have in the past). I returned to Canada after my trip within 2 days without any issue.

I have another trip to the US in 2 months. Will it be a problem if they ask me when my last entry was? As there is no record of my exit, even though I was in the states for only 2 days.

No. This process is very very simple.

Declare all travel as request. Be completely honest. If you do this - nothing bad can or will happen.

If you choose not to provide accurate information - this is the only thing that will actually cause you an issue.

Good luck!

Both USA and Canada border agency have access to Nexus card trips. So no problem. Just be honest about all your trips.

You were just waved through or did they scan your card?

They scanned my card. I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem, so hopefully there isn't any issue the next time!

But did you have a valid I-94 from a previous trip (i.e. one that was not yet expired)?

If not, you could be in trouble. You are not supposed to use Nexus without a valid I-94 already linked to your Nexus card.

Were you in a Nexus Lane? If yes, it's your fault. If no, it's the border guard's fault. (But you could still get blamed.)

I have not used Nexus yet, but planned using it via land crossing in car with my family(all have Nexus card, but not used yet)

As someone suggested above, "getting waved through" by border guard might cause issue in entry-exit records. In that case should I ask the guard to scan cards?

From someone who uses nexus, I thought all cards get scanned even if you just show it. Some kind of big remote scanner there.

I just checked my I-94 history online, and see that the "Admit Until Date" is July 13, 2017. So I guess that's why the border guard didn't ask for my I-94, since I already had one from a few months back?

Also, since my next trip to the states will be in August, I will need to get a new I-94. In the event that the border guard just scans my Nexus card then, and waves me through - is the onus on me to tell him that I need a new I-94?

The I-94 needs to be explicitly linked to your Nexus card; you have to go into a Nexus Office to do that.

For your next trip in August, you CANNOT use the Nexus lane since your I-94 will have expired. You will need to go through the regular lane to get a new I-94. And then you have to go to a Nexus Office to link the new I-94 to your Nexus Card.

(I have had to do this every 3 months for the past few years; I know the process well! Some officers will tell you differently but the above is the official, correct procedure.)

Hi Vicky

Thanks for your insight.

I just checked my online I-94 and it says
Admit Until Date :
12/06/2017

Last time I went to US was June. That means I-94 valid for 6 months till December. Does that mean I can use Nexus drive lane until above date(eg in October) without issue of going to Nexus office etc ?

What trouble ? I can't even remember the number of times I crossed with an expired I-94/stamp. Yes, if you're crossing by land you'll have to park and drop in for a new one, but it's still a great alternative to the regular lanes especially if they're jammed up on a busy weekend.

There is a i-94 website maintained by US gov. Enter your relevant details(Passport no, issuing country, date of birth, etc), it will provide you the recorded travel history...

Mike053 - Looking online will not tell you if your I-94 is linked to your Nexus card or not. The only way to do that is in a Nexus office. (You don't need an appointment; just show up. It takes 5 minutes to link it!)

Alpina740 - you crossed the border with an expired I-94? Yikes! Lucky you didn't get caught. But if an officer ever looks into your history and matches border crossings with validity of your I-94 there could be problems.

Vicky, I understand that you've used your Nexus many times, but there is no such thing as "linking your I-94" to anything. An I-94 is now only issued if you cross by land. You make it sound like one is committing a crime by using the term "getting caught". People don't cross the border on their own, they get "admitted". The moment there is a slight problem with any aspect of your entry, CBP will stop you for an inspection, Nexus lane or not. The 6 month entry will count from the date of your last date of entry, regardless whether it was a stamp, I-94, or -in my case- neither.

Here's a good example that will interest you:

My most recent entry stamp is May 03 (so my stay would be until Nov 03). I stayed 1 night, came back, and flew to the US again on Jun 01. At YUL, for some reason CBP just didn't feel like stamping my passport. I asked for it but he said no need. I insisted by explaining that I needed a full 6 months to stay, and with an irritated tone he said "I just gave you 6 months". A few days later I checked my online entries and, indeed, the Jun 01 entry was there. My point is: whether you are entering using Nexus, Global Entry, Sentri, Fast, or EDL, they are admitting you based on the date they see in their database. Of course, glitches happen and they may ask for a hard copy every now and then, but that doesn't put you in a dire situation where you and Escobar are treated the same way. I cross twice a week using 2 bridges. When I cross way before sunrise and the only 1 regular lane is open, I have a quick chat with the same guy who's in the booth and I learn more about the process with each visit.
