When you land as PR and get COPR, all your visas/permits are voided/cancelled. So if you intend to return to Canada directly by plane from the US without a PR card, you MUST have a PR Travel Doc, no exceptions. Airline will not accept a COPR. So your only options are:
- Fly to a US city close to Canada, and drive across the border
- Get a PR Travel Doc
- Don't travel until you get PR card

Doesn't matter what your company says, what Rob_TO says is correct. If you are only going there for 3 days, that will not be enough time to apply and get a PR Travel Document. Therefore you are down to two choices...either find a way to drive back to Canada, or wait for your PR card.

For everyone going through the same thing, I just wanted to let you know that he was able to checkin just fine!
To be clear, I don't think there was much doubt that the airline would allow him to board the plane. It's a non-issue. He has a passport from a visa-exempt country. That's all the airline cares about. If he doesn't have this, or a visa, or a Canadian passport, he would automatically be denied when he tries to enter -- that's the only situation where the airline would not allow him to fly.

The airlines want to make sure of this because a) they will receive a fine from the government if they allow a passenger to fly into a country if they are clearly not authorized to enter, and b) they will be responsible for sending the passenger back to their origin if they are denied entry.
