it's totally optional. I've never paid for a travel insurance and I've traveled all over the globe.

I echo the answers left above. You can buy travel insurance at your home country or buy online from a Canadian insurance company under the Visitors To Canada Plan. Usually it includes coverage for emergency medical services (hospital, ambulance) and dental emergencies. Also, travel insurance is so inexpensive compared to the cost of eventually you get sick or I’ll and need treatment. Don’t put too much faith in the luck.
