Hi everyone,

So I just became a permanent resident a couple of days ago but now I'm going to be traveling to Germany and Greece starting Sunday and my card won't arrive for another 6 weeks.

So from the things I've read it seems highly unlikely I'll be let into the plane to come back to Canada seeing that I can't get an eTA or have anything else to show.

I checked with the visa office in Germany and they told me they need 2-4 weeks to process it which is pretty long, especially because I'm only staying 2 weeks in each country. Most of all tho I can't really give up my passport for the whole trip as I need that to fly inside Europe and get rental cars etc.
Does anyone have experience with how long that usually takes?

Also do the new PR cards usually take as long they say?

So as far as I can see the only options are:
- wait for PR card and have someone send it to me
- apply for PRTD and try to get around without a passport and hope it's done in time for my return
- fly to the US and cross the border by car

Do you guys have any other ideas or comments? Does anyone ever get to fly without having the eTA checked?
I have a German passport btw.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers

It takes about 2 to 3 weeks to get your PR in the mail. That's how long I waited for mine.

its exactly 46 days from landing for PR card to appear in my mail

And yes, those are the options if you need to travel without PR card. PRTD is the best and most official way to get around it. Mailing the card to you overseas is kinda risky (and you have to have someone get it in your mail)

Why is it risky to send by mail? If I send it with signature and insured it should get there no problem no?

Mail could get lost (even if they are registered and tracked), it could be delayed and you might not be getting it when you need it. I guess if you use courier service that could minimize the risk, but also the most expensive. tho I don't know if its more expensive than a PRTD

Ok well my only option at this point I think is flying to New York and have someone pick me up by car to cross the border.
I guess I would need a return flight to get in?
Would I tell the US border officer what I'm doing or would that be a problem?

Hi there! May I ask what you ended up doing to get back into Canada? It's possible my spouse will face the same situation and would like to be prepared!

Thanks!
