Just wondering can I travel back to Canada on valid work permit while waiting for PR card or should be only through PRTD ??

Your work permit is not longer valid once you receive your COPR.
you will indeed need your PR Card to come back into Canada or a PRTD

I heard that few of them successfully entered in Canada in valid work permit after Ecopr so just wondering.

You can surely try.
I don't believe the airline is connected to the IRCC database to actually verify the validity of the work permit.
Once you are in Canada, they cant refuse you entry as PR. But I would expect some pushback from the officer at the POE.

I've also read some people saying claiming it worked.

It's a dice roll. Most of the time work permits are automatically canceled in the system either immediately or within a few weeks of landing. You can try. Just be prepared to be refused boarding by the airline if their computers show your work permit is no longer valid in the main system.
