Hi everybody,

I got a PR confirmation recently and I would like to make short landing at Pearson Airport, Toronto. Then, I will move to Canada next summer. I have some questions:

1) If I arrive at night time, the immigration office is still available to handle my landing?
2) I probably go back to my home counrty the next day, is the time enough for me to do all the things for landing?
3) Except the PR confirmation letter, what should I bring else?

Thanks a lot.

Regards,
Jeff

Ans: Yes, immigration is 24/7 service
2) I probably go back to my home counrty the next day, is the time enough for me to do all the things for landing?
Ans:Applying for SIN, Health card, driver's license, etc can be done in six hours if planned properly
3) Except the PR confirmation letter, what should I bring else?
Ans: Read the letter you received from CIC, that used to have a list of papers to bring. Also prepare a list of goods to follow with their value

OHIP Health card is probably not possible to apply for with a short landing. OHIP requires a specific document from this list to prove your Ontario residency, most requiring several days/weeks to arrange for. http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/014-9998E-82~5/$File/9998-82E.pdf

Really for OHIP, there is zero reason to get in advance as they won't meet the OHIP residency requirements anyways. Better to wait and apply when actually moved permanently to Ontario.

I moved to Canada on the 26th of June 2012, and applied for the health Card the next day without any ID showing my Canadian address! It was five years ago, the rules might have changed...

You may have just got lucky to get a Service Ontario employee who didn't know what they were doing, since showing one of those documents to prove residency has been a rule for a long time.

Regardless, since OP intend to leave Canada right away it would be pointless to even attempt getting OHIP since they would just need to re-apply when they return next year permanently.

Yes you are right! I found my OHIP application, I applied for in about three weeks after moving to Canada; ie after getting driver's license and rental agreement...

My wife sponsored me for the permanent residence. For the short landing, should my wife go with me for registration? Can I do all alone?

But to my knowledge, we don't have to apply for Health Card or Driver's license if we are doing a short landing.. pls correct me if I am wrong

You are correct.

Indeed, as discussed above, you are probably not *eligible* to get Healthcare if doing a short landing. Drivers Licensing may be possible, depending on your Province (eg, BC requires your PR card, which takes at least 2 months to arrive).

You don't have to, but you may! I myself did not do it when I first landed.

Those were the answers to specific questions raised by a member.

Hi,

My COPR mentions city of destination as Ottawa. Do I have to land in Ottawa only or can I land in Toronto as well. I am inclined towards landing in Toronto.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Shahid

You can land anywhere, preferably the in same province as destination city. My city of destination was Toronto, and I landed at Fort Erie....

these are my experience for applying for the health:
1- from List 1 I used Record of Landing
2- from List 2 I went for driver license written exam (You can walk in and take the exam) and got a paper showing that I have passed
3- from List 3 I used my country's Passport.

Applying SIN is easy as well as opening a bank account. You will have to have a secure deposit to get a credit card though.

What's secure deposit, is it similar to Fixed Deposit (as in India).
