Can anyone that recently sponsored their US permanent resident spouse tell me how long it took to get the application processed? I am a Canadian citizen and hoping that it will take less than a year...

I understand it may have only been 3-7 months if he was a US citizen. Does anyone have any real numbers based on their situation with a US permanent resident spouse? He has lived in the US for 23 years as a permanent resident.

you can take a look at the ottawa spreadsheet in my signature (the blue link below). this is how we track the progress of our applications. the current "trend" seems to be 6 months. On the spreadsheet, you will see exactly how long each stage has taken for all applicants who are listed on the spreadsheet. These are real time accounts by real life people. you can't get more "real" than the spreadsheets on this forum.

Since your husband is not a us citizen, it is unknown if his application will be processed quickly in ottawa like straightforward us citizen applications or if it will be transferred to LA. No one will be able to tell you this. Only CIC will be able to confirm where the application is being processed.

It's a good question. Right now it is US citizens with no red-flags being fast tracked at CPP-Ottawa. The ones being slowed down that I am aware of are people who are in the US temporarily on a student or work visa. I imagine US Green Card holders will have good timelines also, maybe close to the US citizens, especially one that has held it for 23 years. This is just my opinion however.

Hi triple p,
I completely understand!! I am a US citizen and my husband is the Canadian citizen. We needed to submit extra proof that my husband can financial support us once I land so my application took a little longer than others on this site. It took us 9 months and 3 weeks to receive my COPR. I have yet to land for other reasons but I am hopeful it will happen before snow fall!

I've had my US GC for about 7 years now. My common-law-partner and I submitted our application for my Canadian PR this February. I just got DM last week, so all in all it took just over 8 months. It took a bit longer compared to applications sent in for US Citizens with no red flags submitted around the same time, but then I had to resubmit my FBI clearance letter and update my partner's residency status in Canada so that probably delayed the process by a few weeks. Hope this helps.

great! good to know. it's been one of the many unknowns for us applicants, since those on work visas tend to get pulled into interviews. are you listed on the ottawa spreadsheet? it's in my signature. feel free to add/update yourself.

Yes I'm on the spreadsheet.

I've only seen a handful of other forum members that have a GC and only a couple of cases that applied before me. One case that applied before me took over a year to get their COPR. Another one who applied last December had their file transferred to LA and is still waiting. There are a couple of others who applied after me that are waiting so it's difficult to see the trend at this point.

Actually, i just checked on the status of the person that applied in December - he recently posted an update saying their application was refused at the interview because CIC claimed his wife's US GC status was unclear although they have no doubt about their relationship. That's sad, hopefully they'll be able to sort it out...

If any of you are currently in Canada, how are you handling your residency? Did you have any issues at the border as a visitor?

I am currently here on a work permit but may be interested in applying outland since it's going so quickly, but my permit expires in June. I'm afraid of having to leave and come back as a visitor and then being denied re-entry. Has this happened to anyone?

i posted an answer in the other thread you are posting in. if is very rare for a US PR Applicant to be denied at the border. generally, they are more lenient when you are married and have a pr app in process. as explained in the other thread, it is not necessary for you to leave canada to apply outland. you can change your status as a visitor and stay there for the whole process. there is nothing wrong with this at all.

Thanks again! I responded in the other one so I'll stop here so we don't have the same conversation going twice!
