Time limit on work permits and when does it start

I wanted to ask how many years they allow on a work permit in Canada, and do those years start from when you enter the country or before that when you receive the visa from the embassy?

As of April/11 it will be a maximum of 4 years (except for Nafta and GATS) The clock start ticking when you enter Canada.
