If you can get an ESTA and go into the US even for a few min, that would be the easiest. The "admin refusal" is there mostly so that people can land even if they are not visa-exempt for the US, or inadmissible to the US for a reason or another.

Quick question about getting "Administrative Refusal" from the US. Does it have an effect on any travel to the US in the future? Gonna take the Mrs to Hawaii for her birthday, and I'm going to a video game convention later in the year in Boston too!
It will have no effect on future travel to the US. It is a mere formality to expedite the landing procedure.

Cool cool. I think we'll just go to Buffalo for the day anyway. I wanna buy some nice booze that the LCBO doesn't have. Gin is under appreciated in Canada.

I think you might get stung for import duty though :'(
Maybe drink it before you land? ;) (that was a joke for the humourously challenged).

Hehe. I can bring 1.5 Litres of spirits in with me duty free. Not promising that I won't be drinking before landing though. It's a party after all.

Having said this, I still don't have my passport back yet, and haven't done my medical yet, so I'm still a solid few months away!

Hey DGT

Hope I'm not bursting your bubble but there is zero duty free allowance for stays of less than 24 hours :)

Landed yesterday in TO, arrived in Pearson. Had to queue for over an hour, eventually was told I shouldn't technically be allowed to land because me sponsor wasn't with me and wasn't in Canada. Told the IO that I wasn't aware of this requirement...he landed me anyway. No problem with customs clearance after that, and that was it. All in took around 1.5 hours from plane landing to entering Canada as a PR.

Spending a few days here with friends before heading back, glad to have it finally done and dusted!

Congrats and welcome to Canada! strange about the requirement - a lot of people land without their partner and it's not a problem.... CIC itself advises that it's OK to land, get it done, go home to finish packing etc, and then move permanently to Canada! strange strange... glad they let you land anyway! would have been such a waste of time!

Hey all,

slightly off topic but I thought I could ask! a friend of mine is moving from overseas to Toronto for work (his employer is doing the LMO, he doesn't have to worry about work permit!), but he doesn't know the city. For those of you who are based there, what area would be a good one for a family with young kids? Any advice on Toronto and where to start on arrival would be very much appreciated!
thanks!

Ya I thought it was okay to land alone, nowhere in any of the literature does it mention the need for the sponsor to be there or to be in Canada...our application contained a letter from my sponsor with intention to return in June this year clearly indicated.

Anyway, thankfully he let me land, would have been a major inconvenience if he hadn't. Thanks for the welcome, its more than I got from immigration! :)

For a nice family environment i'd recommend the Bloor West Village (Bloor Street West @ Runnymede). It's a nice environment, lots of nice places to eat but not a wild party place, and it's on the subway line. The East End is nice for family life too around The Beaches and Leslieville. I think the beaches is pretty pricy, but it's beautiful and on the Queen Streetcar you can get downtown nice and fast. Those are my thoughts!

Seconded. And High Park is awesome, even when you're not a kid anymore :p
