I got my Ontario driving license without bringing the paper part. I never even knew that was required and the person at the counter had no idea it existed...

After I surrendered my UK driving license I applied for a new one online (20 quid). So I now have both licenses :p

My fiancé was contacted by Service Canada after he applied for his Alberta licence to say that they wouldn't issue his permanent card licence until he sent his UK paper counterpart to them!!
Guess you were lucky!

You can always request another copy of your paper counterpart from the DVLA in the UK. So there is no reason to not have both a UK and Canadian drivers license once you have handed in paper/photo card stuff to Canada. Makes the whole process a bit pointless...

I think with Service Ontario, they are just desperate to get people in and out. Particularly if you are in TO! They are always swamped...

Bah!

I guess I'll hound my mum and dad and get them to hunt around for it! :)

Legally is there anything wrong with applying for another UK licence after you've surrendered it, so you have both? It would be easier to have a UK one for when we visit England.

Thanks for the help!

I'd take the advice of just exchanging your photocard licence, it seems that it works ok in Ontario. What's the worst that can happen? If they refuse because of the counterpart, then search for it. And if you want to keep your UK licence, just apply for a new one.

The nearest Service Ontario is out of the way enough that it'd be a slight annoyance if I had to go back again. If I can get the paper counterpart found and sent over to me, then great. If not I'll probably try with just the card anyway, but nothing wrong with being prepared in my books.

Fingerprints should be there tomorrow! I sent it in with a note that had my file number, UCI, name, address, DOB - everything I could think of to help them match the prints to my file more quickly.

We're so close to being done now I'm actually starting to get nervous! Excited, but nervous :)

I tried this very same thing a couple of weeks ago. I phoned the DVLA to request a replacement licence, but they had been notified by Canada that I had surrendered my licence in order to obtain a Canadian one. There was a note on their system. Over a year had elapsed since I made the switch, so I guess if you do it immediately after you have exchanged, chances are they won't know. I suppose it is also possible that even if you get a your replacement UK one sent, it might not actually be valid following an exchange, but I'm speculating.

If ever you permanently go back to the UK, you can do the exchange just by filling out a form from a post office and it's a straight swap.

They normally need to know everything lol they're very nosy!! :p
Not meaning to rub it in but it took less than 2 weeks to go from in process to decision made. There is no rhyme... or reason.

Please someone help

Our Canadian Visitors visa has expired but we applied for an extension before it did.

Do we need to wait for the extension to be able to go across the States and flagpole? We are Visa exempt to the States - just wondered if the Canadian side will say we have already overstayed welcome and give trouble - we only have a proof of payment as well as a document showing we sent in our application and it was received in Vegreville.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure on this, but I believe you have Implied Status as a visitor while the extension is being processed. Honestly, I would recommend just waiting it out!

Here's an interesting little note from the UK, for any of you poor folk that have had to deal with British Immigration before.

The UKBA is no more! They've decided to dissolve it because it is a broken institution. Hilarious.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-21941395

Of course, this now puts the immigration system firmly into the paws of Whitehall. Which is just what we needed. right?

Yeh massive budget cuts but don't worry the cost of dissolving a department and transferring it to another one is totally acceptable. Lol Torylogic.

CIC emailed me back today saying my COPR was posted on Monday. Given that over 2 weeks ago they told me I'd have it "within 2 weeks" I'm going to take this with a pinch of salt, but I guess it's good news (better than not hearing anything)...
