RE: Taking distance online courses while on OWP waiting for PR approval
on all the spousal PR obtained OWP this message is printed: "...unless authorized, prohibited from attending any educational institution, or taking any academic, professional or vocational training course."
but I have read that distance or online courses are not considered, so apparently according to this no authorization is required for those, but I wanted to read the link to CIC about this
I read about it before on here and on CIC, guidelines to where one can take courses while on an OWP (ie. not a study permit) if they are distance or online courses. I haven't seen it in a long time, and wonder if someone has a link to it or the most updated interpretations/guidelines on this
thanks
EDIT:----->
I dig some digging and found answers to my question, so I will post that here for others' benefit:

"Distance learning can be through e-learning, correspondence, or internet courses. Distance learning is a process by which technology is used in ways where the student does not have to physically be in the place where the teaching is taking place.
Since by definition distance learning does not require one to be in Canada, a study permit cannot be issued for this type of course. For example, if a foreign national authorized to work in Canada is prohibited from engaging in studies as per a condition of their work permit, they are allowed to engage in distance learning courses.
However, some distance learning courses include an in-Canada portion to the program (e.g., special tutorials or the writing of final exams). If the overall course of study is greater than six months, then the student requires a study permit for the in-Canada portion of the program, even if the in-Canada portion is less than six months. The duration of the study permit should be for the duration of the in-Canada portion only."
The interesting thing about this, is some online courses require 1 single day of attendance for final exam writing, so it seems by the above quote from CIC, one would need a study permit valid for 1 single day (which I wonder if they are even able to give while one is on an OWP and working full time). Kind of a strange situation. Perhaps best to stick with courses that don't require any attendance for final exam or otherwise and all tests and content is done online or distance.
Curious if anyone has ran into this situation and needed to write a final exam in person for one day for an online course that was longer than 6 months?
