Background:
Currently, I am staying inside Canada, with sx-1 student visa. I don't have a study permit now, since now I am just doing a short-term studying (less than 6 months, without any credit, the only official document is an invitation letter from a professor).
I just get a master program offer from a designated institution, which will start in next year January.

Problem:
1. Can I apply a study permit inside Canada?
2. When I apply a study permit, do I need also apply a new type visa? Since now I already have a student visa.

You can apply while you are in Canada. However your study permit application must be sent to a visa office outside of Canada (best to select your home country visa office). The application cannot be processed within Canada.

Thanks so much for your reply. Then I have two more things concerned.

1. in the imm1294e form (application of study permit form), there are two questions: "Current country or territory of residence" and "Country or territory where applying". So in my case, I should fill in Canada for the first one, and my home country for the second one?
2. Should the whole process of study permit application works online? (and get the permit paper at the entry port finally). Do they need my passport? If so, since I sent the application to my home country, how could I submit my passport back while I stay in Canada (I assume the passport should be sent to the place where receive my application)

Are you sure your study permit has not been cancelled? How long have you not been studying?

Ah, I see that my statement is a bit unclear, let me explain with more detail.

I never have a study permit before. I just graduated from university in my home country in June this year. Then I come to Canada to do a short-term research assistant in a college, but this work is without any credit, most likely just between me and my advisor. And this work is unpaid. I came here with a sx-1 student visa without a study permit, because it is less than 6 months. For now, I am admitted into a master program in the same college where I am now doing research assistant. Therefore, now I need to apply for a study permit for further stay and study.

The 6 months will be up before you start in January so you will likely have to switch to visitor status and stop working unless you can convince CIC to extend which goes against the less than 6 months stipulation or you can return home.

I see. Thanks for your reply. But I wonder if there is a way that I can apply for study permit inside Canada? According to what Scylla said, it looks like I can simply submit application of study permit online to my home country's visa office (even I personally stay in Canada). Well, I am a bit worried about the possibility of this solution. Main concern is that if they need my passport, do I need to mail my passport to the office? Even though I am in Canada? Is this possible?

Hi guys,

I am currently in Canada, on a study permit and my studies start in September 2020. Since I cannot work in Canada, I recently got an opportunity to participate in an art contest for a company based in the USA. The video production for the contest will be done here in Canada by one person here. Is this also considered as working in Canada if I go ahead and participate? The company in USA will py winners of the contest.
Can I also do freelance work as a writer for foreign employers that are outside Canada?
I also got an ITA for EE CEC and will submit my application this month. Will this affect my application?

Please reply at your earliest convenience and if possible, include a link with such info. I've ben searching online for a while now.
