Hey guys! My study permit is rejected. My wifes work permit and my 2 childrens visitor permits are also refused. Below is profile, my time table and SOP can you please help me out.

Grounds of the refusal are as following;
• I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on the purpose of your visit.
• I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on the limited employment prospects in your country of residence. I submit a letter from my employer which states that I will turn back to work in the same company after my graduation, I stated it on SOP.

I have applied study permit on 14th of Aug. in Turkey my visa refused on 23rd of Sep.

I have a bachelor of civil engineering degree, graduated on 2008 however since then I am working as a technology specialist who is combining my civil engineering knowledge with my coding knowledge. I am basically working as an IT guy, creating and maintaining software in construction firms. I have enrolled to Fanshawe College Computer Programming and Analysis advanced diploma program.

My SOP is below, please give me your ideas. What is the problem? Is it my SOP or program which I was applied to.

Dear Madam/Sir,

It is respectfully submitted that I have been granted unconditional admission in Fanshawe College, School of Information Technology, London, Ontario, Canada, CPA3 – Computer Programmer Analyst Post-Secondary Advanced Diploma program with 3 terms (12 months) mandatory co-operative work period. My classes are scheduled to start on September 8, 2020 and ends on December 31, 2023. First term of the program will be delivered fully online due to current epidemic and delivery format may change for January 2021 term and onwards. I am currently submitting this application for your consideration.

I have graduated from Cukurova University Civil Engineering department on August 2008. I have met with computer programming on the 3rd term of my bachelor’s education which I had an AA grade (Please check attachment – 1 for my Bachelor’s Degree Diploma and transcript) and almost immediately fell in love with magical world of coding and the idea of creating software which would affect daily lives of the millions all around the world. However, it was too late for me to change my program since I did not have the required financial capability. In addition to that, I liked civil engineering as well so I continued my civil engineering degree simultaneously self educating my self on computer sciences and computer programming languages. I was determined to blend my knowledge of computer programming languages with civil engineering degree after graduation.

My first work experience was in a United States Military Base in Iraq with Em………………..Company (Please check attachment – 4, for proof of employment) as a civil engineer, between January 2009 and September 2010. I took place in the technology department of the project and our work was to assist the design team to improve and accelerate structural designs, using computer programming languages, which our company produced for various construction projects in the middle east. I have mainly used C++ and Fortran languages as well as my engineering knowledge. The conventional approach to design structures are full of limitations and requires so much time to calculate forces and loads. It is not suitable for creating of structural designs which has very limited duration of execution. More importantly, it is more open to human errors. To sum up, my work was to create more accurate and safer designs with optimized cost and execution time using computer programming languages.

Between April 2011 and March 2014 I have worked in various construction firms as a quality department chief and as a construction site manager and gained experience more about civil engineering then computer programming (Please check attachments 5-6-7-8-9 for proof of employments). However, From April 2014 to August 2019 I have worked in …………… Group Companies in Stary Oskol/Russia (Please check attachment – 10, for proof of employment) then transferred to Moscow / Russia (Please check attachment – 11, for proof of employment) and I had more chance to use my computer skills in construction industry. In ………Company I worked as a Superstructure Chief until August 2016 and my biggest achievement was to developed a software for desktop usage which was used to order and monitor construction materials by each department of construction management team of our company. This achievement provided me a promotion and a transfer to Moscow. In ……Construction at Moscow, between August 2016 and August 2019, I was the lead engineer and my main duty was to take place in a team who created and maintained a software and a mobile app called Qua….. for the nation wide quality assurance team of our company to process and monitor every feature of construction quality management system such as non-conformity management, corrective action management and KPI management. Being the largest construction firm of Turkey and one of the largest construction firms of all world, ….. Holding provided me the opportunity of gaining a tremendous experience in computer programming and software development.

From September 2019 to the date, I am working at …..Company in ......... / Turkey (Please check attachment – 12, for proof of employment), at the largest construction project of Turkey up to the date, Akkuyu Nuklear Power Plant the first power plant of Turkish Republic, as a civil engineer. My main work is, towards engineering needs, to determine required modules of …… Portal, which is a corporative resource planning system, introduce them to engineering departments, integration, enhancement and maintenance of those modules to ….. Portal.

I have a strong passion in computer programming. I have always tried to use my computer skills to benefit my company with my self education on computer science during my career however, I have continuously experienced the disadvantage of a proper education on computer programming. In years of experience in construction world, I have observed that there is no one in Turkey who blends computer programming with civil engineering practices but me. After my graduation from CPA3 – Computer Programming Analyst Program, with the proper education on computer programming, I will make a substantial advantage to be the lead of the technology department in my company and have a tremendous acquisition on my way of changing the conventional construction management approach especially on structural design processes and construction quality management system in my company.

I strongly believe in hands on education is the most affective way of learning especially when it comes to computer programming. Because in computer programming, using of programming languages and algorithms in real projects right after learning them is essential to understand how they really work. I have checked all computer programming courses provided in Turkey. Unfortunately, there is not a single educational institution in Turkey offers co-operative education program. All of them provides theoretical education with no hands on practices. In addition to that, I have observed that computer languages that are taught in those institutes are out dated and do not meet the needs of todays technological developments and expectations of companies. On the contrary, Canada provides updated, practical and world class education on computer sciences which is recognized globally. Canadian education institutes are considered great value which is no less then to US and European Countries. Nonetheless, compared to other countries across the world, education and living cost is very low in Canada.

Being very close to tech. hubs such as Waterloo and Toronto, London and Fanshawe College offers a very good location for a technological program. Fanshawe College CPA3 – Computer Programmer Analyst program offers an innovative and hands on learning experience with using especially two features which are applied research courses and live client interactions. Applied research courses are given on the 5th and 6th Level of the program, called INFO-3112 Managing Software Projects-Applied1 and INFO-5103 Managing Software Projects-Applied2. Those courses will allow me to demonstrate various software development skills that I have been exposed in previous courses and I will take place in a team which would develop an entire project. Live client interactions occur by total of 12 months period co-operative work terms on second and third years of the program. During these co-operative work periods, I will interact with professionals and clients in the work place under a supervision of a mentor and I will complete the tasks given. This is going to give me a clear understanding on employers and clients expectations and trendy programming languages used. This innovative and hands on training is the main reason which I prefer Fanshawe College then the others.

due to caracter limits I will continue below.....

It is required to complete 30 credits to complete the program. Program consist of 6 academic terms with 3 work terms and starts on September 8, 2020 ends on December 31, 2023. First term of the program will be delivered fully on-line however, delivery format may change for January 2021 and onwards. When I will complete the program I will be mastered on Java, C++, JavaScript, C# and SQL programming languages and I will have broad understanding on software design, web design, database management and mobile application development. These courses are the main reason why I chose to have a post-secondary diploma education rather then a post graduate education. It is because, rather then theoretical information the program offers hands on and practical courses which I will exactly need during my work after graduation from the program. I have been informed by program advisor that the work load especially after second term of the program will be huge so I have no intention to work while studying, except my co-op work terms, thanks to my financial savings.

During my first term of the program I will keep working in my current work and during study in Canada, I am going to be officially on leave from my current employment and I will return my …..Company when I finish my education (Please check attachment – 12, for letter on the issue provided by my employer). In addition to that, after my graduation from Fanshawe College it is very likely for me to work freelance at my spare time and create software or web pages in Turkey, which would provide me significant amount of additional income.

Ties to the Turkey:

I work as a civil engineer in ………Company, I am going to be officially on leave from my current employment during my study and I will return my employment when I finish my education (Please check attachment – 12, for the letter on the issue provided by My Employer). I have a good career and a good salary as per Turkey’s standards and it is very likely for me to get a promotion and have a higher salary at my present Employer in Turkey after my education at Canada.

My parents and my sister live in Turkey. We have very strong family relations.
.....
Thank you for your time and appreciate for your help.

Sorry to hear this. To me I believe the primary reason for refusal is the Diploma you chose to pursue. Though, at face value, an advanced diploma is somewhat at an equivalent academic level as a Masters degree... I have seen repeated cases where Visa Officers refusing Study Permits when older applicants opt for this. Additionally, going with your direct family weakens your ties to your home country. Lastly, I would advise you to shorten your SOP and keep it lean and to the point.

In my humblest opinion I think that your sop was too long. Given the current situation the entire world is in the officers only have so much time to look at an application. We don't know if the back log has been resolved as yet. Also you've completed a bachelor degree maybe you should have pursued a post graduate program or a masters program. Also, it does look suspicious that you are applying for visas for your entire family which contradicts your home ties. But do order gcms notes to figure out why you were refuse and try again.

due to caracter limits I will continue below.....

1. You should apply for a Master's program instead of a Diploma. Getting into an university has much better chances of getting the VISA approved.
2. Your SOP is quite long, three pages. I am not an expert on SOPs but you should trim it down to 2 pages.
3. Your SOP should not be your life story. It should explain why you chose that specific course, how it will benefit your future, how it will help with your employment in your home country, why you chose Canada, etc.

I am sorry to hear your application refused. I think you need to revise your SOP. It contains too much and irrelevant details and has lots of grammatical errors. It would be best if you answered clearly the following questions.

  • Why have you chosen to study in Canada? (Why specifically "Canada")
  • Why are you not pursuing a similar program in your country?
  • Why homeland education is not good for you.
  • How the education you get here will contribute to your country in the future?

Even though you have answered some of them, I felt lost while reading your explanation letter. You are older than 30+, which also raises red flags to join for a diploma program. If you consider to re-apply again, order GCMS notes to understand the exact reasons. I advise you to rewrite your letter based on the concerns VO had and keep it short. They don't have much time to read such an essay; they just skim and look for the answers for questions they had in their mind.

Do you think the VO has time to read all that?? I would say sop no more than a page, you have written an essay. Think of it this way, the more you write, the more likely you will be rejected.

They will skim your SOP. It needs to be one page (300 to 400) words at most. And as others have said, a diploma given your age and prior experience adds nothing to your employability/future job prospects. You should apply for a master's degree. See my guide to study permit refusals (link in signature) for more advice.

I don't think the quality of a SOP is determined by the amount of text written in it, but how well-written, well-formatted, straightforward and easy to read it is, rather than how long or short it is.

Yes, and if your SOP is more than a page long, it's not well-written or straightforward. They don't want to read your life story. Be direct.
